WS Faculty of Engineering,Built Environment and Information Technology The FEBEIT at WS is committed to producing skilled, innovative, and industry-ready graduates There are a total of 13 programmes on offer in the faculty.

The faculty offers diploma and advanced diploma programmes in engineering, information and communications technology, and a diploma programme in building technology. The programme offering consists of three diploma and three advanced diploma programmes in civil, electrical and mechanical engineering respectively, four diploma programmes in information and communications technology (four different

streams: support services, business analysis, communication networks, applications development) and two advanced diploma programmes in applications development and communication networks as well as a diploma in Building technology

Graduates from this faculty typically find employment in industry (consulting firms, construction companies, manufacturing and/or automotive sector, IT companies, etc.), State-Owned-Entities (Eskom, Transnet, etc), Local Authorities (Municipalities and District Municipalities) or within the various spheres of Provincial and National Government. Graduates may also use their obtained competencies to become self-employed. Specialisation areas of graduates are varied, and include many fields such as material science, hydraulics, automotive, electronics, design, planning, construction management, quantity surveying, programming, systems analysis, and many other related fields.

CELEBRATING WOMEN'S DAY: DIVERSIFICATION OF CAREER PATHS IN BUILT ENVIRONMENT EMPOWERING WOMEN, TRANSFORMING THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT AT iYUNIVERSITHI WALTER SISULU

The New Auditorium at iYuniversithi Walter Sisulu's Butterworth Campus came alive with inspiration, empowerment and meaningful conversations as students, academics, industry professionals and stakeholders gathered to celebrate Women's Day under the theme, "Building Her Future: Empowering Women, Transforming the Built Environment."

The event provided students with an opportunity to engage with professionals and industry leaders while exploring the diverse career pathways available within the Built Environment sector. The programme was organised under the leadership of Ms Andisiwe Dumako, a lecturer in the Built Environment Department, in collaboration with the Association of South African Quantity Surveyors (ASAQS) Student Chapter at iYuniversithi Walter Sisulu.

The Built Environment Department forms part of the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology (FEBEIT). The celebration reflected the Department and Faculty's ongoing commitment to exposing students to industry, professional development and career opportunities beyond conventional roles in the Built Environment.

The programme was facilitated by Ms I. Macingwana, who served as the Master of Ceremonies. Following the welcome, Ms B. Mdzanga introduced the guests and outlined the purpose of the day, setting the tone for a programme focused on career exploration, empowerment and professional growth.

Students were encouraged to look beyond traditional career paths through a presentation by Mr A. Mdunyelwa from Mbhashe Local Municipality. Speaking on "Beyond the Traditional Career Path: Building Control and Careers in Local Government," Mr Mdunyelwa shared his professional journey and experience within the municipal environment. He highlighted the important role Built Environment professionals play in local government, particularly in building control, development management and infrastructure. Mbhashe Local Municipality also showcased its work through an exhibition stall on the day, giving students the opportunity to engage directly with the municipality and learn more about career opportunities in local government.

Another valuable perspective was provided by Ms Vice from the Eastern Cape Department of Transport, who presented "Finding Your Professional Niche: My Journey into Safety in the Built Environment." Her presentation introduced students to Occupational Health and Safety as a career pathway and demonstrated the important role of safety professionals in construction, transport and infrastructure development.

Ms A. Ndabangaye from the Independent Development Trust also inspired students through her presentation, "From an Unexpected Beginning to a Built Environment Career: Discovering the Possibilities." Her contribution reminded students that professional journeys do not always follow a predetermined path and encouraged them to remain open to opportunities that may emerge along the way.

The programme extended its focus beyond career development through the "Building Her Future: Dignity and Support Initiative," led by Ms Dumako and the ASAQS Student Chapter. The initiative highlighted the importance of creating supportive environments where young women can pursue their education and careers with confidence, dignity and access to appropriate support systems.

The ASAQS Student Chapter would also like to acknowledge the Office of the Extended Programme, and, in particular, the woman leading that space. Sometimes leadership is not about how high a position you occupy, but about whether you are still willing to reach back and take someone by the hand. Her commitment, support and willingness to uplift students reflect the kind of leadership that creates opportunities, builds confidence and changes lives.

The Women's Day celebration served as a powerful reminder that the Built Environment is a diverse and dynamic sector, offering opportunities across construction, quantity surveying, building control, occupational health and safety, transport, local government, development institutions and many other fields.

Through the leadership of Ms Andisiwe Dumako, the ASAQS Student Chapter, the Office of the Extended Programme and the wider Built Environment Department, students were encouraged to look beyond the classroom and envision themselves as future professionals, leaders, entrepreneurs and change-makers.

The message of the day was clear: women have a vital role to play in building the future of the Built Environment.

This was more than a Women's Day celebration. It was an investment in the next generation of Built Environment professionals and a call to build a future where women are empowered to lead, innovate, construct and transform the spaces in which society lives and works.

A WELCOME ADDRESS BY PROFESSOR MASHWAMA: CELEBRATING WOMEN’S MONTH – HOW WOMEN FORGED SOUTH AFRICA’S BUILT ENVIRONMENT FROM THE ASHES OF APARTHEID, AND WHY THE FIGHT ISN’T OVER

iYunivesithi Walter Sisulu's Butterworth Campus came alive with inspiration, empowerment and meaningful conversation today as students, academics, industry professionals and stakeholders gathered to celebrate Women's day and champion the diversification of career paths in the Built Environment. The commemoration, held under the theme "Building Her Future: Dignity & Support Initiative," closed off Women's Month with a call for the built environment sector to become a space where women do not merely participate, but lead.

Delivering the welcome address, Professor Xolile Nokulunga Mashwama, Head of the Department of Built Environment, set the tone for the day by tracing the long and often overlooked history of women's contribution to the built environment in South Africa from the rural homesteads shaped by women's hands to the townships where, under apartheid, women organised the construction of crèches, markets and clinics because, as she put it, "no one else would build it for them."

Professor Mashwama reminded guests that the story of women in the built environment "is not a story of exclusion it is a story of extraordinary resilience." She traced how black South African women endured a "double struggle" during the twentieth century, fighting both the racialised injustices of colonialism and apartheid and the gendered marginalisation imposed within their own communities. Even so, she noted, by the 1970s women made up just 2.5% of South Africa's construction workforce a stark reminder of a profession built to keep them out. Yet, she said, "still, they came."

She paid tribute to the pioneers who forced open the industry's doors: Bonani Mkhize, the third black woman to qualify as an architect in South Africa, who was told by a lecturer that "black people couldn't draw in 3D" yet went on to complete her qualification in 1996; and Professor Hangwelani Hope Magidimisha-Chipungu, who in 2023 became the first black woman in South Africa to attain full professorship in town and regional planning. She also honoured the women who built careers in quantity surveying, construction management and project management, including Lulu Gwagwa and Ntombi Langa, who she said "did not just break barriers they shattered them."

Turning to the students in the room, Professor Mashwama spoke directly to their sense of purpose. A quantity surveyor's role, she said, is not simply to count costs but to ensure that public funds are spent transparently and that communities receive value for their money. A construction manager's task is not only to manage schedules but to keep workers safe and turn an architect's vision into reality. A project manager exists not just to coordinate teams, but to solve complex problems and deliver work that transforms communities. "You are here to build hospitals that heal, schools that inspire, and homes that shelter," she told students. "You are the guardians of the environment our children will inherit."

Professor Mashwama then invoked the legacy of the women who fought for the freedoms today's students enjoy Charlotte Maxeke, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, Albertina Sisulu, Lillian Ngoyi and Ruth Mompati and the 20,000 women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956, chanting "Wathint' Abafazi, Wathint' Imbokodo" "You Strike a Woman, You Strike a Rock." Where that generation fought for political freedom, she said, this one must now fight for economic and professional freedom: a seat "at every table where decisions are made." She was emphatic that women belong not only in the lecture hall but in boardrooms, on construction sites, and in the offices where policy on South Africa's cities and infrastructure is written. "You are not a minority in a man's world," she said. "You are the future of a world that belongs to everyone."

She challenged students to take a stand without apology, to be bold in a field that too often expects women to be quiet, and to take themselves seriously as future leaders. But she was equally clear that ambition must be carried with Ubuntu, respect and humility values, she said, that the women of the struggle embodied and that today's graduates owe to the communities they will serve. She urged the young women in the audience to mentor those who come after them: "When you enter the boardroom, do not close the door behind you. Hold it open." And she extended the message of partnership to the department's male students and colleagues, describing the relationship between men and women in the profession not as competition, but completion: "We need your support, your mentorship and your advocacy not to hold us back."

Closing her address, Professor Mashwama reminded the audience that the built environment offers "endless opportunities to lead" in local, provincial and national government, development finance, banking, real estate, property management and construction law, among many other pathways. "There is no ceiling above you," she said. "The only limit is your imagination and your determination." The Women's Day commemoration formed part of iYunivesithi Walter Sisulu's broader Women's Month programme and reflected the Department of Built Environment's ongoing commitment to mentorship, transformation and inclusive leadership within the industry.

Professor Mashwama left students with a final charge, rooted in the legacy of the women who came before them: "Go out there and take your place. Not as a guest. Not as a token. Not as a diversity statistic. Take your place as a leader. As a builder. As a creator. As a visionary."

Empowering Women in Construction: ASAQS Student Chapter Hosts Inspirational Women’s Day Event

The ASAQS Student Chapter within the Built Environment under the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology (FEBEIT) is today hosting a special Women’s Day event aimed at inspiring and empowering female students to confidently pursue careers in the construction and built environment industry.

Led by Ms Lusanda Sokufudumala, a Lecturer within the Built Environment, the event creates an important platform for women in the industry to share their experiences, challenges and successes with the next generation of female professionals.

The event focuses on encouraging female students to embrace the unknown, take on challenges and believe in their ability to reach the highest levels of their chosen careers. With the construction industry traditionally perceived as a male-dominated sector, the event seeks to remind young women that they have an important role to play in shaping the future of the industry.

Adding practical industry perspectives to the programme are two accomplished women entrepreneurs, Ms Emihle Tyali and Ms Ncumisa Gomosha, who are construction business owners and actively involved in the industry. Their presence provides students with an opportunity to learn directly from women who have taken bold steps to establish themselves within the construction sector.

Through their experiences, the speakers are expected to highlight the realities of working and owning businesses in the construction industry, including the importance of resilience, confidence, determination and the willingness to take risks. Their journeys demonstrate that success does not come without challenges, but that challenges can become opportunities for growth and advancement.

The event also encourages students to look beyond the limitations they may place on themselves and to recognise the opportunities available within the broader built environment sector. Whether pursuing careers in quantity surveying, construction management, project management, architecture, engineering or related fields, female students are encouraged to aim high and pursue their ambitions with confidence.

Ms Sokufudumala’s leadership in bringing together students and women working actively in the construction industry demonstrates the importance of mentorship, industry engagement and creating spaces where young women can see themselves represented in professional and leadership positions.

As the ASAQS Student Chapter celebrates Women’s Day, the message is clear: women belong in construction, women can lead in construction, and women have the power to transform the built environment.

The event serves not only as a celebration of women but also as a call to action for female students to step forward, challenge stereotypes, embrace opportunities and never be afraid of the unknown.

The future of the construction industry needs women who are bold enough to dream, courageous enough to take on challenges and determined enough to build the future they envision.

CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT HOSTS GEOSYNTHETICS PUBLIC LECTURE

The Civil Engineering Department at Walter Sisulu Buffalo City Campus hosted an insightful public lecture on 30 July 2026, bringing together staff and students to explore the role of geosynthetics in modern civil engineering. The lecture, titled "Introduction to Geosynthetics", was presented by Monique Albertyn, Technical Marketing Engineer at Kaytech (Pty) Ltd, and attracted an enthusiastic audience eager to expand their knowledge of this specialised field.

During the session, Albertyn introduced participants to the fundamentals of geosynthetics and highlighted their growing importance in the design, construction, and maintenance of civil engineering infrastructure. She explained the various types of geosynthetic materials and outlined their seven primary functions in engineering applications: separation, filtration, drainage (including transmissivity and throughflow), reinforcement, stiffening (stabilisation), barrier, and protection. Her presentation demonstrated how these materials improve the performance, durability, and sustainability of engineering projects across different environments.

The lecture also showcased practical applications of geosynthetics across sectors such as transportation infrastructure, mining, containment systems, erosion control, and geotechnical engineering. Through real-world examples, attendees gained valuable insights into how these innovative materials are used to address engineering challenges while enhancing efficiency and long-term performance.

Speaking at the event, the Head of the Civil Engineering Department, Professor Akinola Ikudayisi, welcomed Albertyn and expressed his appreciation to Kaytech (Pty) Ltd for partnering with the department to provide the educational session. He thanked the company for generously sharing its expertise with staff and students at no cost, noting that such industry collaborations enrich the learning experience and help bridge the gap between academic theory and professional practice.

The public lecture formed part of the department's ongoing commitment to exposing students to current industry trends, emerging technologies, and professional expertise. By fostering partnerships with leading industry stakeholders, the Civil Engineering Department continues to equip its graduates with the knowledge and practical understanding required to excel in the ever-evolving engineering profession.
