The Rhodes University Marimba Band (RUmband) was honoured to perform at ILAM, sharing the stage with TAMBO in a celebration of African music, culture, and community. Together, we demonstrated the power of marimba to connect people across generations and backgrounds, reminding us that our music is more than performance, it is living heritage.

What an incredible learning experience!

Today, the Rhodes University Marimba Band, together with students from the Institute for the Study of Music (IMS), had the privilege of participating in an intensive workshop led by ethnomusicologist Noah Randall from the University of Colorado Boulder.

The session challenged us both musically and intellectually as we explored a complex Zimbabwean mbira-style arrangement in 11-time. Through hands-on performance, listening, and discussion, we engaged deeply with the rhythmic, melodic, and cultural dimensions of Southern African musical traditions.

The workshop pushed us beyond our comfort zones, demanding focus, collaboration, and careful attention to interlocking patterns that are central to mbira and marimba ensemble performance. It was a reminder of the richness of Indigenous African musical knowledge and the value of intercultural musical exchange.

A huge thank you to Noah Randall for sharing his expertise, passion, and insights with us. Experiences like these continue to strengthen our musicianship and deepen our appreciation for the living traditions that inspire our work
