What if nature could help us tackle antibiotic resistance?

A University of Pretoria-led international research team is exploring how compounds found in plants, fungi and microorganisms could help make existing antibiotics effective again.

With antimicrobial resistance responsible for an estimated 1.14 million deaths in 2021, finding new solutions is more important than ever.

UP researchers are using Marion Island as a living laboratory to explore how changing wind conditions shape ecosystems. Their interdisciplinary research reveals that wind influences where plants grow, how seeds disperse, and even the nesting and flight conditions of albatrosses.

The findings highlight an important message: future climate change assessments need to consider changing wind patterns alongside temperature and rainfall.

Meet Qhawekazi Mazaleni, Miss South Africa and a postgraduate student at the University of Pretoria. Beyond her role as Miss South Africa, Qhawekazi is pursuing her master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology, where her research focuses on caregivers’ understanding of autism at the time of diagnosis.

Her work aims to strengthen parents’ knowledge of autism and highlight the important role that speech-language therapy can play in supporting children and families. Through her postgraduate journey, Qhawekazi is contributing to greater awareness, informed caregiving and more inclusive communities. Her research is a reminder of how postgraduate education can turn knowledge into meaningful change.
