South Africa is home to 26 public universities. Usually when applying to universities, you often need to budget for application fees.

Interestingly, there are certain universities in the country that do not require an application fee. Considering that application fees can be quite costly, it is beneficial to be aware of the universities that waive this requirement. Here is a list of South African universities that do not ask for an application fee:

University of Johannesburg (UJ)

The University of Johannesburg (UJ offers a wide range of course, from diplomas to degrees to postgraduate courses. UJ also offers a wide range of online courses. These range from short courses to full certificates, continuing education programmes, degrees and postgraduate courses.

North West University (NWU)

North West University (NWU offers Undergraduate studies, Postgrad studies, Distance Learning and Short Courses. NWU has three campuses, namely: Mafikeng Campus, Potchefstroom Campus and the Vaal Triangle Campus.

University of the Free State (UFS)

The University of the Free State (UFS does not need an application fee to be paid to apply.

UFS has nine faculties for prospective students to choose from. Along with these faculties, they also offer Open Distance Learning and Business School. Students can also participate in more than 22 different sport disciplines.

Sol Plaatje University

Sol Plaatje Universit doesn't need an application fee to apply. SPU has only one campus located in the Civic Centre in Kimberly. They offer courses in Economic and Management Sciences, Education, Humanities and Natural & Applied Sciences.

Central University of Technology (CUT)

Those wanting to apply to study at the Central University of Technology (CUT) need not worry as you won't be asked to pay an application fee.

CUT offers a variety of departments at their campuses. Courses are offered for the following faculties: Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology, Health and Environmental Sciences, Humanities and Management Sciences.

Nelson Mandela University (NMU)

Applications to study towards a diploma or degree qualification at Nelson Mandela University (NMU) must be done by using NMU's online application syste, and require no application fee.

Walter Sisulu University (WSU)

WSU accepts online applications only and no application fee is needed.

At WSU, students are provided with affordable, appropriate, career-focused and professional programmes that address rural development and urban renewal with primary emphasis on science, technology and development studies.

University of the Western Cape (UWC)

Applications to study at the University of the Western Cape (UWC)don't require an application fee. Students must apply online via the university's online application portal.

Given that, you still have a possibility to enroll in South Africa even if you don't have any money. It's fortunate that we merely require results.

About the Sasol Foundation Bursary

Bursaries will be awarded in 2 categories

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) bursaries: for undergraduate studies in these fields:

Chemistry

Computer Science

Data Science

Education (majoring in STEM subjects)

Engineering (All disciplines)

Financial Science

Mathematical Science

Technology

Health Science

Other

Non-STEM bursaries

for students from Sasol’s fence line communities (municipalities / districts around Sasol plants / operations); as well as children of Sasol Khanyisa shareholders; and children of Sasol employees.

Bursary Coverage Value

Bursary recipients will be selected based on the following main criteria: academic performance, household income, acceptance to University/ University of Technology and South African citizenship.

The bursary will provide cover for the following expenses: registration fees, tuition fees, books, pocket money, accommodation, meals and a once-off computer and calculator allowance.

Bursary recipients will also receive psycho-social support (including student discussions, workshops, EAP – Employee assistance programme at Sasol, and more).

Bursary Selection

Applicants will be screening based on the following criteria:

- South African citizenship

-Household income verifications

-Acceptance or conditional acceptance to a University or University of Technology, for a STEM field of study approved by the Sasol Foundation

-Academic performance

-Combined household income

-Final preference will be given to financially needy and academically talented candidates

Shortlisted candidates will be required to complete the Online Odyssey Psychometric Testing. The final outcome of the bursary will be communicated to all applicants.

Bursaries will be awarded on the basis that the candidate's 2023 end-of-year results do not differ drastically from the results submitted during the application process. Sasol reserves the right to withdraw the bursary award if the candidates' academic performance is substantially worse than the academic results submitted during the application process.

The bursary will provide full cover for the following expenses: full tuition fees, textbooks and other study materials, laptop, accommodation, meals, a monthly living allowance and transport (in the form of a bus ticket, between home and campus 4 times a year).

Before final selection is made, applicants will be required to participate in a formal assessment process, which may include but is not limited to Psychometric evaluation and an interview.

After graduation, bursary recipients will be required to work for Standard Bank, depending on availability of positions.

What is SANRAL?
South African National Road Agency Soc Limited (SANRAL) is a south african state-owned enterprise with the responsibility of maintaining, managing and developing the expanding national road network within the country.

Full and partial bursaries will be awarded (depending on the student needs), to cover the following expenses.
