Today's Focus:
Dealing with Wicked Decrees:
Today, our emphasis is to establish this reality: a wicked decree cannot be erased by mere observation or protest, it can only be outmatched by a counter-decree of equal authority.
We continue, my friend. The archive is written. Now, we must confront a harder legal reality.
Mordecai's letters gave the deliverance a memory. But memory alone does not save a single life still under threat, because the original edict against the Jews, sealed with the king's own ring, was still law. Today, we meet a principle that every reformer, every institution, and every Church confronting entrenched wickedness must reckon with: "some evil, once codified, cannot simply be cancelled. It must be outweighed" by a counter-authority strong enough to hold the field against it.
|| Word Study:
The Hebrew word for the king's signet, tabaat (טַבַּעַת), denotes the ring of authority whose imprint made a document legally irreversible once law had gone out under it, this is precisely why Ahasuerus, having already surrendered his ring to Haman, could not simply strike down the first decree, he could only issue a second bearing the same seal. The Greek sphragis* (σφραγίς), a seal, is the word Paul later uses of the believer's standing, "sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise"* (Ephesians 1:13), authority stamped upon a person or document that cannot be casually undone by a subsequent, lesser word. Institutions confronting injustice must understand this, you rarely erase a wicked structure once it is sealed into law or culture, you must build a structure of equal or greater authority to stand against it.

|| The Narrative:
Esther 8:1 to 14. Haman is dead, but his decree against the Jews remains in force, for Persian law, once sealed by the king's ring, could not be revoked (Esther 8:8). So the king gives his ring to Mordecai, and a second edict is written, granting the Jews the right to assemble, defend themselves, and destroy any who would attack them. The text is careful to note the second decree was sealed with the same authority as the first, "sealed it with the king's ring." Evil's decree still stood on the books. But it no longer stood alone. A matching decree, riding on matching authority, now contested every province where the first had run unchallenged.
|| Voices from the Field:
This principle is visible in South Africa's faith sector even now. The Faith Leaders' Gender Transformation Programme, convened by faith-based coalitions working alongside civil society this Women's Month, held its August monthly forum on 5 August 2026, part of a running calendar of sessions through the year addressing restorative justice, GBV and mental health, spiritual abuse, and youth vulnerability within congregations. This is not a single sermon against abuse and then silence until the next crisis. It is a standing, dated, recurring counter-structure, deliberately built to run alongside, and outlast, the entrenched cultures of silence and cover-up that have allowed abuse to persist unchallenged inside faith communities themselves. Where the culture of silence has been sealed in by decades of practice, the answer is not a single protest, it is a counter-institution with its own seal, its own calendar, and its own authority to convene, correct, and hold accountable.
|| Leadership Insight:
Many well-meaning leaders exhaust themselves attempting to repeal what they should instead be outweighing. You will rarely find the single decree, apology, or policy change that erases decades of entrenched injustice, corrupt structures rarely reverse themselves. The mature leader, like Mordecai, asks a different question: what authority, sealed with equal or greater weight, must I now establish, so that even where the old decree still stands, it can no longer stand unopposed?
|| Three Marks of the Counter-Decree:
|| One, it does not deny the old decree's existence. Mordecai did not pretend Haman's edict was cancelled, he built around what could not be undone. Leaders confronting entrenched wickedness must resist the temptation to declare premature victory and instead build structures robust enough to function even while the old system persists.
|| Two, it carries matching authority. A whispered dissent cannot outweigh a sealed decree. The counter-structure, whether a commission, a council, a covenant, or a canon, must carry weight equal to what it opposes, informal goodwill is not sufficient armour against institutionalised harm.
|| Three, it grants the vulnerable the standing to act, not merely the sympathy of onlookers. The second decree did not simply express regret to the Jews, it gave them legal standing to defend themselves. An institution's counter-decree against injustice is incomplete until it hands agency, not just acknowledgement, to those it was written to protect.
|| Making a Difference Challenge:
|| Personal: Identify one "old decree", a habit, a silence, a fear you have carried for years, that you have tried repeatedly to simply will away. Stop trying to erase it. Build one new, deliberate practice this week strong enough to outweigh it.
|| Institutional: Every congregation and organisation under our banner will audit where an "old decree" of harmful culture, whether around gender, power, or silence, still quietly governs behaviour, and shall establish a counter-structure, a policy, a standing committee, a covenant, with equal institutional weight to contest it.
|| Systemic: Faith bodies across our continent must move beyond issuing statements against entrenched injustice and instead establish standing, resourced, recurring counter-institutions, bodies with their own seal and calendar, capable of holding the field against cultures of harm that a single decree can never fully repeal.
|| Prayer:
Father, we confess that we have often prayed for old decrees of wickedness to simply vanish when You have called us to build. Give us the courage of Mordecai to take up the authority You have placed in our hand and seal a new word into the world, one that grants the vulnerable standing, not merely our sympathy. Where evil is entrenched, make us builders of equal and greater weight until Your justice holds the field. Amen.
