Recent graduate looking for an opportunity to start your career?

Applications are open for 15 CATHSSETA-funded internships at UJ Arts & Culture and the UJ School of Tourism and Hospitality in Auckland Park, Johannesburg.

Gain practical experience through opportunities in:

• Lighting and sound technology
• Performing arts administration
• Hospitality

Duration: 12 months
Monthly stipend: R5,000, subject to statutory deductions
Who can apply: Recent graduates with relevant qualifications

Tydens sessie 2 van Teksmark Joburg 2026 by UJ Kuns & Kultuur bied veteraan-teaterregisseur Marthinus Basson ’n fassinerende inleiding tot die kuns van kabaret aan.

Dit fokus op die ontwikkeling van die kunsvorm – van die intieme kafees en literêre salonne van Europa tot die vestiging daarvan as een van teater se uitdagendste en veelsydigste genres. Verder verken die sessie die ontwikkeling van kontemporêre kabaret aan die hand van konsepte, sketse en teksidees deur opkomende en gevestigde teatermakers, waaronder Llandi Beeslaar, Vihann van Rooyen, Ilse-Lee van Niekerk en Karli Heine, onder leiding van Coenraad Rall.

What does it mean to bring someone home for Christmas?

UJ Arts & Culture, in collaboration with the Johannesburg Institute for Advanced Study (JIAS), invites you to a staged reading of Christmas eBhofolo, a new play by Siphiwo Mahala.

Directed by Gift Ngobeni, the reading features Samela Tyelbooi, Samson Khumalo, Fiona Ramsay and Mpho Malesa.

Set in Fort Beaufort in the Eastern Cape, the story follows a family’s wish to bring their matriarch, Nobuntu, home from a psychiatric hospital for Christmas. When hospital rules stand in their way, past wounds surface, raising difficult questions about family, compassion and how we respond to people living with mental illness.

It’s a Wrap!

Tonight marked the last night of the UJ Arts 2026 Showcase.

Thank you to each and every one of you who showed up to see us put on the shows at the UJ Arts Academy 2026 Showcase.

From their hearts to their pens, from their mouths to our ears, giving words life, the Poetry Slam reached its final round tonight and it was words in the air of the theatre dropping like rain in our hearts.

From the Top 15, congratulations to the Top One Poetry Slam Mpumelelo Makoloane for taking it hope and for the fire behind his words and to all the poets who poured poetry into our cups, congratulations to you too for taking us through the pages of life, reciting the lines of hunger, violence, the economy, GBV, governance, love, sorrow, tears, happiness, and awareness through your poetry!

Facilitated by Richard “Quaz” Roodt, When I Meet Myself is a poetic exploration of self-reflection, identity, memory, and the quiet journey of becoming.

Featuring original works developed throughout the 2026 UJ Arts Academy Poetry Programme, this poetic piece allowed us to witness moments of self-discovery, vulnerability, healing, and growth being celebrated, inviting audiences to reflect on the ever-evolving nature of the self.

Tonight is Day 3 of 4, the night of dance for the heart and beats for the souls, where Ash and Honey and Home Away from Home took us into a world of storytelling through movement, making our hearts feel every moment.

Have you ever heard of Romeo and Juliet and their love story?
Well, tonight we meet the UJ Arts Academy Ballet's South African version, Ash and Honey, directed by Ipeleng Merafe Derby from Vole Ballet.

A piece centered on the arc of love, celebration, devotion, and loss. It mirrors the original story while speaking in a new voice elegantly.

Directed by Fana Tshabalala, Home Away from Home took us back to the era of African American slavery and explored the experiences of African people who were enslaved during the transatlantic slave trade, as well as the lasting impact of their resilience on music, dance, and culture.

The performance took as through everdance, culture, music and feel of how these traditions evolved over time, highlighting their profound influence in the contemporary world of movement.

If you could not catch Days 1, 2, and 3, you can still catch the final day tomorrow. 🎭✨
