TEDxVega

TEDxVega Our theme for 2015, ‘Rethink/Unlearn’, aims to fundamentally challenge the ways we perceive and interact with the world around us.

From the moment we enter this world, our minds
shaped. They are moulded by the customs and conventions of tradition, birth, and upbringing; therein begins a seemingly irresistible process of conformity to the tried and true. Yet, it is only when we break free of the old that truly innovative thought can spring forth. From Apple to Amazon, Tesla to Tinder, companies and individuals across the globe

are abandoning the ways of old and seeking to generate disruptive change; revolutionising how we work, play and even fall in love. As the Einstein once famously said: "We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking that created them."

The 3rd speaker announced for TEDxVega 2015: Samkelo Radebe

Samkelo Mike Radebe is a South African Paralympic sprint runner and high jumper who competes in the T45 class. He lost both arms in an electrocution accident at age 9 when his kite got caught in electrical wires. The South African organization Children of Fire assisted with Radebe's rehabilitation after he was injured. He began running in high school in 2003.

After failing to qualify for the 2008 Beijing Games, Samkelo had a point to prove. Surprising the world, Samkelo came back to win a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games, and a gold medal at both the 2011 IPC Championship and the 2012 London Paralympic Games. He is one part of the South African 4x100m relay team that claimed a world record time of 41.78 seconds at the London Games. In total he has bagged over 50 gold medals and nearly 20 SA records for the 100m, 200m, 400m and long and high jumps.

Radebe has been chosen as Sportsman with a Disability of the Year at both the Ekurhuleni Sports Awards and the Gauteng Sports Awards. Alongside his training, he is currently doing his articles at Werksmans following his completion of Bachelor of Law (LL.B) at The University of Johannesburg.
