🌱 The Hazel Futa Project: The Soil Remembers Exhibition

What remains when a story is forgotten? ✨🌾

The Hazel Futa Project revisits the legacy of Hazel Futa, Miss South Africa 1955. Grounded in the theory of biocentrism (the idea that energy and consciousness cannot be destroyed, only transformed), this interdisciplinary project by Khaya Mchunu, Thato Radebe, Tobias Barnard, and Zaakirah Delair asks how we resurrect narratives when the individuals can no longer speak for themselves.

Using her iconic 1955 Zonk! Magazine cover as a guide, the research team re-created Futa's winning garments and inoculated fabric swatches with microbial samples from the soil of her remembered footsteps. Cultivated on agar plates, these garments become living, growing sites of memory, proving that forgotten stories never truly end.

🎨 After Panic Exhibition

What happens after the disaster leaves the news cycle? 🌫️⛏️

In After Panic, Ruth Sacks (curated by Vaughn Sadie) brings her focus down to earth—literally. Moving away from her iconic 2005 skywriting artwork Don’t Panic, this new body of work dives into the deep geological histories and environmental realities of Johannesburg.

From toxic mine slurry to imperishable man-made rocks and reclaimed dumpsite art, Sacks confronts the ongoing impacts of environmental racism and challenges our relationship with a damaged planet. Hosted at the Origins Centre Museum, the space creates a powerful bridge between the beginnings of humanity and the modern threat of extinction.
