Today we concluded a two-day STH Postgraduate Symposium and Writing Retreat, expertly facilitated by Prof Tichaawa Tembi Maloney.

This initiative provided Master's and Doctoral students with dedicated time, guidance and peer support to advance their research and writing as they approach the final stages of their postgraduate studies.

Today, our first-year Hospitality students had the opportunity to learn from Mr Fikezweni Mthembu, owner of a local bakery, who shared his expertise and passion for the art of bread making.

Through this engaging guest lecture and practical demonstration, students gained valuable insight into the bread-baking process, the craftsmanship behind quality baking, and the dedication required to build a successful business in the food industry. The session concluded on a delicious note as students enjoyed sampling the freshly baked bread.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Mr Mthembu for generously sharing his knowledge and experience with our students. We also thank Ms Ita Geyser for facilitating this enriching learning opportunity and for continuing to connect our students with industry professionals who bring classroom learning to life.

Yesterday, the Food Evolution Research Centre (FERC) at the University of Johannesburg’s School of Tourism and Hospitality was honoured to host Professor Emile Chimusa, Professor of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology at Northumbria University (UK), for an insightful public lecture titled:

“From Genome to Fork: Leveraging Multimodal AI to Predict, Personalise, and Prevent Diet-Associated Disease.”

The lecture explored how advances in artificial intelligence, genomics, microbiome research, and multi-omics science are transforming our understanding of nutrition and health. Attendees gained valuable insight into how data-driven approaches are paving the way for personalised nutrition, earlier disease prediction, and more targeted prevention strategies.
