On Thursday 05 November 2020 the Research Connect team hosted a delegation from the West Coast College at the 4IR Experience hub at the premises of Schneider Electric. The aim was to explore the possibility of collaboration between the University of Johannesburg and the West Coast College where UJ will assist the WCC in exploring and implementing strategies, systems and solutions in the following areas:

4IR Technology
Industrial Automation
Augmented Reality
FSASEC Network

Some very exciting opportunities were identified and another workshop will be scheduled in due course to further explore these collaboration opportunities.

Well done UJ for being one of only 10 SA Universities that will complete the Academic Year in 2020

Ten South African universities are pulling out all the stops to complete the 2020 academic year before the end of 2020. The other 16 are aiming for next year.

The Research Connect Team representing the University of Johannesburg School of Electrical Engineering, visited the rural community of Gwakwani on Friday 16 October 2020 together with the University of Pretoria. The aim of the visit was to introduce the community of Gwakwani to our colleagues from the University of Pretoria. Together these two Educational Giants will be collaborating on research regarding Malaria, the spreading patterns as well as how to combat the dire situation concerning the spread of malaria in the Matatane Region.

The Delegation was also treated to a glimpse into the new State of the art 4 IR Experience Lab that will be constructed in the next two months. A presentation was given on some of the technologies that will be showcased in the Lab as well as a rendering of what the final product will look like once it is completed.

As part of the Visit of the Delegation a tour was also conducted through the UJ Technolab showcasing the latest Technology in Robotics as well as the various Robotics Programs currently presented at the UJ Technolab.

On Thursday 05 March 2020 the Research Connect Team; together with the Executive Dean : Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, Prof. Daniel Mashao; hosted a delegation from the French Embassy, Schneider Electric South Africa and Resolution Circle at the UJ Technolab. The Aim of the visit was to discuss future collaboration between all the parties on an extremely exciting new Project regarding the Training of Electricians in the South African Job Market as well as showcasing a new Research Connect Project, namely the construction of a state of the art 4IR lab at the University. This Lab will be used to showcase the latest technology in Industry with regards to automation and 4th Industrial Revolution Concepts. It will also be used to provide students with exposure on these latest technologies. Collaboration between South African and French Universities were also discussed and some very exciting opportunities were Highlighted. This project could possibly also culminate in the Visit of the French President to the new 4IR Experience Lab at the University of Johannesburg. SHELL ECO MARATHON SOUTH AFRICA 2020 REGISTRATION OPEN !!!!

Hi Everyone. This is just to let you all know that we will be co-hosting the Shell Eco Marathon South Africa event again this year. The Competition will be held at the Zwartkops Raceway in Centurion from 23 - 26 July. On the 6th of January 2020 Mr Cornay Keefer from UJ and Mr Max Legodi from the IDC Visited the Matatani community. The purpose of this visit was the establishment of a Community Development Trust.

This trust will in future be used as a vehicle to collect funds to develop the Matatani region including the Rural Villages of Matatani, Mbodi and Gwakwani.

Mr Legodi explained the process to the community as well as the Chief and his council. A board of trustees were elected to represent the community on the trust and all necessary documentation was completed.

Some brilliant ideas were presented by community members on how the region can be grown to facilitate economic growth and job creation. A community development plan will now be drafted by the University of Johannesburg and after approved by the IDC and board of trustees this plan will be implemented.

This is a huge step in creating some financial freedom for the communities in this region and we are looking forward with great anticipation to the fruits of this initiative.

The research connect team visited the Gwakwani Village from 01 - 04 December 2019 to complete some preventative maintetance before the December Holidays and to ensure that everything is fully functional allowing the bakery to produce at maximum capacity over the festive period. Some alterations were also made to the Cold Storage to improve efficiency and 9 New Streetlights were also installed in the village to allow for more ambient light during the night.

We were accompanied by three Dutch Exchange students from the TU Delft University. Jason Beck, Koen Hartman, and Wieger Voskens. The three gents had an absolutely amazing experience. They also invested their time in teaching the young children of Gwakwani some basic literacy and Numeracy skills.

Loads of fun was had by all and some very good work was done on this trip. We want to again thank all our sponsors, Schneider Electric as well as the Forever Tshipise Resort and their amazing staff whom without this project and the successes and growth in the community simply would not be possible.
