Wits' Mobility and Electrification Research for Africa (MERA) Lab played a key role in supporting the CyberLocos expedition as it travels across Africa in pursuit of a world record for visiting the most countries in an electric vehicle.

During its South African leg, the international expedition was hosted by the MERA team under the leadership of Prof Lesedi Masisi and Dr Muhammed Aswat. The journey is testing the practicality of long-distance electric vehicle travel in regions where charging infrastructure is still developing.

This Youth Month, we are celebrating Wits students who are making their mark in sport, academics and beyond. 💙🏛

A Postgraduate Diploma in Digital Business student and accomplished hockey player, Morgan de Jager has excelled on both the national and international stage.

After representing South Africa at the FIH Junior Hockey World Cup in 2023 and being named Goalkeeper of the Tournament at the Junior African Cup of Nations, she has continued to rise through the ranks of South African hockey.

Now a member of the South African Women's Hockey Team, Morgan recently helped South Africa win the 2026 African Cup of Nations and secure qualification for the FIH Hockey World Cup, where she is currently preparing to compete later this year.

Alongside her sporting achievements, Morgan graduated her undergraduate degree on the Dean's List after being admitted to Wits through the prestigious Top 100 Applicants programme, demonstrating excellence both on the field and in the classroom.
