WITS RocSoc Geoscience at Wits goes beyond just academics. RocSoc hosts various socio-economic events during the course of the year.

We encourage our members to become well rounded individuals with a strong academic foundation and strong social skills. Our aim is to ignite ones passion for geology while developing the social skills of our members and forging an element of unity. These include: Welcome Braai; Careers day; Fieldtrips and The RocSoc Ball amongst others. RocSoc has a soccer team (The Navigators) and we are looking into establishing a netball team.

Given Hlagala Mothapo is in his 2nd year and he is a very social person. He likes making jokes and making everyone feel comfortable around him. He likes meeting new people, learning from people and also sharing his knowledge. He is easy to talk to and one of his weaknesses is that he can't say "no" to people. He states that he helps anywhere he can. He is very passionate about Geology as a field of study and he can't imagine himself studying anything else besides it.
He wants to be a part of the committee because he wants to help people to develop a passion for Geology and make them aware of how broad and exciting Geology is, and he wants to help his fellow students with information relating to bursary opportunities, vacation work and all other tools that they could use to further their education or advance their careers. "There is nothing that gives me so much pleasure as seeing someone succeed in life". He wants to make it more social and more academic by helping and ensuring the success of the RocSoc tutorials that were established by the current committee.
He believes he should be given a chance because he loves team work and he has good leadership skills, and he believe the class has confidence in him hence he was elected to be the class representative. He does not like disappointments and he hates disappointing people. "I am a man of integrity and I value honesty and the fair treatment of people irrespective of their race, gender, religious belief or their socio-economic background."

Laetitia Munonoka

She believes that she has enough valuable insight and skills that make her a suitable candidate for being part of the committee. "If I am fortunate to be selected, I will use this leadership opportunity as a platform on which to project and implement I and my colleagues’ vision for the society: to bring geological awareness and inspiration to secondary students, so that it is a study option they are fully aware of, and to assist current geologists in formally practicing their career and creating connections at an early stage". She also aims to enhance the livelihood of disadvantaged communities, beginning with the people at the university, through fundraising, donations because she believes that our concern as a Rocsoc does not solely pertain to the physical environment but the souls making it.

What she stands for:

Ambition, independence, teamwork and honesty with lots of ice-cream and picnics makes fun!

This is Tumane Maitshoko and she is currently doing her second year. She wants to be part of the committee because she enjoys Geology and she would like to see the growth within the committee through working with other members of the committee to ensure that learners who are still in high school are made aware of this interesting field of study and get all the necessary information about the requirements of this, especially those who come from rural areas where means of getting information are not available. She believes that being part of the committee will also enable her to work with her fellow colleagues in the Geoscience Building to ensure that we have there is an area of study which is unified regardless of race, background and all the other factors that hinder unity.

This is Victoria Chepape and she is currently in her second year. She believes that the Rocsoc committee is one that help students in different ways and brings out the best in their ability to understand Geology. Her interest in Rocsoc started in her first year when she attended tutorials that were aimed at helping students with their geology studies and from that day she knew that she also wanted to make a difference and be part of the committee that will illuminate her love for Geology.

She is interested in being part of the RocSoc Committee because she knows that she is capable of doing great things, "I am ambitious and I am keen to learn". A wise man once said "the best way to interact and boost your self-confidence is in university" and she therefore wants to put herself out there. She also wants to help out where she can, while getting experience and learning from others. "I want to communicate, build a stronger relationship with other people, i want to know more about working with other people, sharing ideas, developing the committee, having leadership opportunities but importantly i want to be given the opportunity to serve, pay it forward and give people a chance to see me in action".

Phathutshedzo Matamela

Seeing is believing is one of the African proverbs, and he believe that without education there is nowhere we are going in this world. He believes in the wisdom that Rocsoc imparts onto the minds of Geologists. "I've always been a youth who tries to face facts, accept life's reality as new knowledge and experience unfolds". He says that being part of the subcomm taught him some facts and faults that he believes he can apply and rectify next year."I believe that having kept my mind open throughout the Rocsoc activities and meetings earned me a flexibility that must go hand in hand with any form of intelligent search for a better solutions to every problems ahead of the 2018 Rocsoc committee".

He wants to make sure there is effective communication between the committee and the students of Geosciences that will result in progress. He want to make sure he does things that are in line with proper leadership because he has seen other leaders do it. He also wants to answer life's most common question 'what are you doing for others' by doing all he can for the committee.

All in all, his main goal is to boost the relations between students, and have them help each other to the benefit of everyone. He believes he possesses the necessary skills to excel in this role. He would be very grateful if you elect him as part of the 2018 committee because "within me lies the secret of a good leader without many faults (few because geologists have their faults)" .

Prudence Marshall would like to be part of the RocSoc committee because she does not believe in complacency, but believes in consistency, progress and success, which are some of RocSoc's aims and make up RocSoc's ultimate vision which is to have every student in the school of Geosciences succeed.
She love working with people. "I am committed to giving out my time in helping people and ensuring that people have an idea of where they are going and helping them get to that point".
She believes that One cannot lift up a pencil using only one finger, but a pencil can be lifted using two or more fingers. Should she be part of the committee, she would want to work with other people as effectively as she can in making sure that everyone becomes prosperous in this industry.
She will work hard in making sure that every person who has joined the society is happy and satisfied.

This is Tlou Ngwasheng and she believes in black empowerment . She believes that Wits is greatly populated by black students and so is the country as a whole, and therefore to her empowering the black nation means empowering South Africa. She says "Young minds can be empowered through education". She would appreciate a chance to assist Geology students reach their goals, "By reaching their goals they gain the power to make South Africa literate and hence a better place to be". She believes that everyone deserves a chance to uplift themselves and make their dreams a reality and "This all can be achieved if their leaders are on the right track and pushes them foward" .
