As we commemorate Youth Month, the College of Business and Economics proudly celebrates Ms Kesaobaka Mmelesi, whose journey reflects the talent, excellence, and impact nurtured at the College if Business and Economics.

Ms Mmelesi is a researcher and lecturer in the School of Economics, as well as a dedicated PhD candidate. With more than nine years of experience in economic research and additional experience in teaching and learning, she represents the power of education in shaping future leaders, researchers, and change-makers.

Her expertise spans academic research, survey data collection and analysis, as well as monitoring and evaluation. She has also demonstrated strong leadership abilities through her role as Coordinator for Peer Mentoring and previously as Marketing Coordinator for the School of Economics.Her research interests include innovation, environmental and climate resilience, development economics, international trade, labour economics, and monetary economics all areas that contribute meaningfully to addressing societal and economic challenges.

In 2015, she received a Certificate of Academic Excellence for her Master’s degree in Economics, highlighting her commitment to academic achievement and lifelong learning.

Through academics like Ms Mmelesi, the College continues to demonstrate the importance of education in empowering young people, unlocking potential, and producing graduates and scholars who contribute to research, development, and transformation in society.

The College of Business and Economics proudly congratulates Dr Lulama Boyce on recently obtaining a PhD in Accounting.

Dr Lulama Boyce study entitled Towards Enhancing the Credibility of Integrated Reports focused on integrated reporting with the aim of developing an Integrated Report Credibility-Enhancing Framework (IR-CEF). The framework is intended to guide preparers in compiling integrated reports, support those charged with governance in asserting report reliability, and assist investors in assessing credibility when seeking decision-useful information.

The study was grounded in a multi-theoretical approach, with credibility theory at its core. A three-phase qualitative design was used: Phase 1 comprised a literature review to identify credibility-enhancing themes; Phase 2 involved a content analysis of 2022 JSE-listed integrated reports ranked in the 2023 EY Excellence Awards; and Phase 3 consisted of semi-structured interviews with expert preparers in listed companies. Findings from all phases informed the development of the proposed IR-CEF.

The College of Business and Economics proudly celebrates Dr Khumalo on earning a Doctor of Philosophy in Leadership.

His doctoral study, titled “The Development of a Spiritual Leadership Model Towards Transformation in the Banking Sector in South Africa,” contributes meaningful insights into ethical leadership, organisational transformation, and values-driven leadership practices within the South African banking sector.

South Africa’s banking sector remains pivotal to economic stability and social cohesion, yet transformation has been slow despite progressive legislation such as the Employment Equity Act, and the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment Act. Persistent inequalities rooted in race, gender and western cultures continue to restrict leadership opportunities, while traditional transactional and transformational leadership models have failed to dismantle systemic barriers or foster genuine inclusion. Richard’s doctoral research introduces a Spiritual Leadership Model as a human-centred alternative, reframing leadership around purpose, belonging, and shared meaning. This model positions diversity as a catalyst for innovation, inclusion, and sustainable growth, moving beyond compliance to cultivate environments where individuals feel valued and inspired to contribute fully.

The study identified eight critical findings: entrenched discriminatory cultures, barriers to minority advancement, autocratic leadership styles, and undervalued transformation efforts, alongside strong alignment between banking values and spiritual leadership principles. Traits such as respect, trust, compassion, fairness, psychological safety, and mindfulness emerged as essential for meaningful change. Spiritual leadership was seen as a driver of transformation, yielding tangible benefits for both leaders and employees. The proposed model addresses current shortcomings by embedding these elements into leadership practice, offering a framework tailored to South Africa’s banking context that bridges the gap between legislative intent and organizational reality, and advancing sustainable transformation in the sector.

The College of Business and Economics congratulates Dr Khazamula Stephen Shiburi on recently graduating with a PhD in Auditing. His doctoral thesis is titled: “A Framework for Internal Audit Disclosures for Schedule Two South African State-Owned Entities.”

His study focused on developing a framework for internal audit disclosures for Schedule 2 South African state-owned entities. His study used a data transformation mixed-methods sequential triangulation design, including a systematic literature review, content analysis, and a survey of Registered Government Auditors. Based on agency and accountability theory, the findings of the study revealed that Schedule-2 South African state-owned entities should disclose adequate internal audit information to the public. This disclosure should discuss the nature of work and activities; organisational status; structure; findings; competence; quality assurance and improvement programmes; effectiveness; approach; and the application of the International Professional Practice Framework in their internal audit functions. In addition to these disclosures, organisations should further publish the internal audit documents on their websites.

In pictures: Head of the Department of Business Management at the University of Johannesburg, Prof Herman Boikanyo Dinko, together with the Manager of Non-Subsidised Programmes (NSPs), Ms Sarah Njapha, and NSP Coordinator, Dr Adelaide Sheik, recently joined UJFM for an engaging discussion on the Department’s vision, academic offerings, and commitment to developing future-fit business leaders and entrepreneurs. The discussion highlighted the Department’s goal of becoming the business management department of choice through innovative, industry-relevant, and accessible education that responds to the evolving needs of society and industry.

The team also unpacked the value of the Non-Subsidised Programmes (NSPs), which provide flexible learning opportunities for working professionals, entrepreneurs, and school-leaving learners. Listeners were introduced to the Higher Certificate in Business Management, Advanced Certificate in Business Management, and a range of Short Learning Programmes (SLPs) focused on employability, entrepreneurship, and workplace readiness. Applications are currently open for the Higher Certificate and Advanced Certificate programmes, while applications for the 11 SLPs officially open on 18 May 2026.
