Wits School of Governance WSG is a place where we focus on building capacity for governance. We seek ways of dealing with the wicked problems that beset governance in Africa.

We use this page to keep you updated about the work, research and events at WSG. What we do:

Teach: To provide academic programmes and short courses to address development, policy and economic challenges with expert tuition and supervision. Research: To provide research and policy analysis in the areas of policy and governance. Community engagement: We provide people with a platform to contribute to debates and dialogues about current issues that affect them. Run networks: We want to expand our networks so our students can benefit from our partnerships. Media engagement: Our public intellectuals offer their expertise to a number of international and national media.

Bindu Cherian, our Manager of the Academic Delivery Unit (ADU), has been awarded the prestigious Vice-Chancellor’s Service Excellence Award for Professional and Administrative Staff (PAS) for the Individual catergory.

The annual PAS awards recognise Wits staff who demonstrate exceptional customer service, process optimisation, and accountability across the institution. For those who work alongside her, Cherian’s recognition comes as no surprise, though her preferred operational style is usually behind the scenes

Meet Yonela Nomalizo Ntshakaza, a changemaker in South Africa was recently recognised as one of the Mail & Guardian's Top 200 Young South Africans for 2026. This WSG alumna graduated from the Wits School of Governance (WSG) December 2025, with a Postgraduate Diploma in Management qualification, which she completed in 2024.

Passionate about education, Yonela says she is trying to solve unemployment and illiteracy, which she believes are directly linked.

When academic excellence meets purposeful public service, real transformation happens (and we are so proud)

We are incredibly proud to celebrate Wits School of Governance alumna, Plantina Tsholofelo Mokone, on her prestigious recognition at the Forty Under 40 Awards South Africa (Governance and Government Agencies category).

As a Master of Public Policy graduate, Tsholofelo exemplifies the kind of conscious leadership the public sector needs. In her critical role as Deputy Director: ICT Multilateral Affairs at the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies (DCDT), she is actively driving South Africa’s digital transformation agenda and representing the country on regional and global platforms.

This is what it means to translate policy education into actionable, real-world impact.

Wits commands the global stage at the 81st UN General Assembly

The Wits School of Governance (WSG), alongside Wits University Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Zeblon Vilakazi, projected African institutional leadership and governance expertise at the highest level of international diplomacy during the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81) High-Level Week in New York.

On 24 September 2026, the University of the Witwatersrand took a leading role in the Joint Presidential Roundtable on Education, Skills and Jobs through South-South Cooperation. Convened by the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) in strategic partnership with the International Cooperation Center (ICC) of the People's Republic of China, this high-level event aimed to accelerate Africa's transition from education to productive industries and decent jobs.

The Wits School of Governance (WSG) is set to contribute African governance expertise to high-level international dialogue during the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81) in New York.

On 24 September 2026, Wits - University of the Witwatersrand Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Zeblon Vilakazi, will participate in the Joint Presidential Roundtable on Education, Skills, and Jobs through South-South Cooperation, convened by the African Union Development Agency – NEPAD (AUDA-NEPAD).

Professor Vilakazi will frame and co-moderate the Roundtable alongside Distinguished Professor Adebayo Olukoshi of the Wits School of Governance, bringing Wits institutional leadership and African governance expertise to a high-level conversation focused on Africa's development priorities.

The engagement provides an important platform for the University to advance its commitment to strengthening Africa's institutions, public policy, governance and leadership, while contributing to conversations that have implications for the continent's education, skills and employment landscape.

The UNGA engagement forms part of a broader programme of high-level dialogue taking place during High-Level Week, which brings together Heads of State and Government and other senior representatives to address pressing global and development priorities.
