Statement by Student Representative Council(SRC)

The Student Representative Council extends its concern following the traumatic incident that occurred last night at a designated residence. We acknowledge the impact this has had on affected students within our community.

Immediately after the incident, the SRC engaged with students residing at that residence who had examinations scheduled for today and were deeply affected. This engagement enabled the SRC to present the circumstances to the university at the appropriate level of authority.

Following these engagements, an academic exception was approved for the seven students who were identified as directly affected. Arrangements have been made for them to write deferred examinations to ensure their academic progress is not prejudiced by the incident.

The SRC remains consistent and committed to upholding the welfare and academic rights of students during this period.

We encourage the student body to look out for one another and to be mindful of mental health and well-being.

STATEMENT BY THE STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL (SRC)

The Student Representative Council (SRC) wishes to inform the student community that there was an unfortunate incident earlier today at Sea Of Mountains Accommodation involving a student who was allegedly attempting to commit su***de.

As the SRC, we would like to assure students that the situation was attended to with urgency and care. The student is safe and was taken to the hospital for further medical attention and professional support.

We would further like to sincerely thank all students and individuals who responded with concern, compassion, and support during the incident. Your humanity, calmness, and willingness to assist during such a difficult moment are highly appreciated.

The SRC would also like to strongly encourage students who may be experiencing emotional, psychological, academic, financial, or personal challenges to seek professional assistance and counselling. There is absolutely no shame in asking for help. Mental health matters, and no student should suffer in silence.

As student leadership, we remain committed to advocating for the wellbeing, safety, and dignity of all students. We continue to stand with students not only academically and politically, but also emotionally and socially during difficult times.
