Wits Students Surgical Society

Wits Students Surgical Society The society is a subcommittee of the Wits Medical Students Council (MSC) and is a member of the South African Society of Surgeons in Training (SASSiT).

Founded in 2010 with the assistance of the Department of Surgery at the University of the Witwatersrand, the Wits Students Surgical Society is a platform for medical students and aspiring medical specialists in the art and science of surgery. Our core objectives are:
- Provide insight into a career of surgery
- Gain valuable surgical skills
- Collaborate with other surgi

cal societies
- Provide a platform for relationships to develop between students and surgeons

The society is well established and continues to grow and mature with every event. The committee actively works to provide members with events, activities and experiences that will enlighten and develop them as they pursue careers in surgery.

The Great Debate 2026 🎙️
What an incredible event!

Paediatric Surgery, Trauma Surgery, Urology and Neurosurgery went head-to-head to battle it out for the title of Specialty Supreme. Each round had the audience laughing, debating and learning more about what makes each specialty unique. The votes were tight, but there could only be one winner… Neurosurgery! 🤩

Represented by our surprise guest, Dr Zorio, Neurosurgery swept the competition and took home the Great Debate 2026 trophy!

But Dr Zorio had one final message for us - and perhaps the most important one of the evening.

The Great Debate isn’t just about finding the “best” specialty (although that’s definitely part of the fun 🙂‍↕️). It’s about inspiring and motivating the next generation of surgeons and clinicians, and encouraging curiosity about the many paths a career in medicine can take.

As Dr Zorio said, thank you to everyone for showing even the slightest bit of interest in surgery, whether through SurgSoc or beyond.

Thank you to everyone who came along, took part, cheered from the audience and made the Great Debate 2026 such a memorable evening. 🩺🎙️

In honour of Nelson Mandela Day, SurgSoc kicked off our month of outreach at the Holy Trinity Soup Kitchen, lending a helping hand wherever it was need and handing out to members of the community!

It was a humbling and fulfilling experience that reminded us of the impact even the smallest acts of kindness can have 💚🌟

This Mandela Day, we are reminded that the spirit of 67 minutes is about more than a single act of kindness - it is about making a meaningful difference in the lives of others and inspiring a culture of compassion, service, and generosity.

Throughout the month of July, the Wits Students’ Surgical Society chooses to honour Madiba’s legacy by paying it forward through acts of service, giving back to our community, and encouraging others to do the same. Together, we can create a lasting impact.
