SASCO POST SHUTDOWN STATEMENT
For Immediate release
17 February 2019
The South African Students Congress took a conscience decision to shut down operations of the university. The Shutdown was informed by the failed engagements with university management over registration issues, accommodation, allowances and other student support services. SASCO will always be on the side of the students from poor and working class in an oppressive system.
The organisation had noted that the registration exemption concession had a number of gaps and where gaps were not there, decisions were not actioned by the relevant departments. Post graduate students were still lingering outside the system and without accommodation. The University had not heeded to some of the decisions by Minister of Higher Education and Training after the SAUS national shutdown.
SASCO further mandated the SRC to use the opportunity to engage the university on the issues we raised with them. The organisation has received a comprehensive report back from the SRC after their meeting. The report on the issues is positive but SASCO is surprised at the lip service of the university. The organisation will be on their heels to ensure all comes into light.
SASCO has noted that:
Registration and Financial Aid:
• 17 036 students had been granted funding statuses by financial aid this figure includes students who might have decided to take up spaces in other Universities.
• 11 557 allowances had been paid to NSFAS-funded students.

• The University has agreed on the working group starting the process of shuttle additions.
We also want to ensure students who do not have rooms that tomorrow before end of the day, they will have a place to sleep.
We furthermore want to warn the University that by Wednesday if these demands are not implemented we will have a mother of shutdowns and this time we won't even give them a chance to engage students, we will be closely monitoring the implementation of these demands. Until the last student is registered we will not rest.
Lastly the SASCO has mandated the SRCto bring back the and we will assist to fundraise towards student challenges. Furthermore, the SASCO-LED SRC commits a portion of the SRC budget towards the Fund and have put out a challenge to the VC to double the amount pledged by the SRC. The MyMandelaFund will also reach beyond the University as we look to play a criticle role towards student’s challenges.
