The 15 May 2026 was an exciting day for the NMU Department of Marketing Management’s Marketing Society Executive Team, as they travelled from Second Avenue campus to Lungisa High School, in KwaDwesi Township, to handover Sanitary Pads to Grade 8 learners of the school.

The sanitary pad drive campaign commenced 14 April 2026 and concluded on 13 May 2026, during which a total of 176 packets of sanitary pads were collected. The initiative focused on supporting Grade 8 learners at Lungisa High School through the donation of sanitary pads collected throughout the campaign. Providing sanitary pads to Grade 8 learners is important because it supports their dignity, confidence, health, and ability to participate fully in school life.

The Marketing Society Executive Team involved in the initiative included Miss. Tiana Meyer (Chairperson), Miss. Tazneen Khan (Vice-Chairperson), Miss. Nomaswazi Kubheka (Public Relations Officer), Mr. Uyanda Ncanywa (Treasurer) and Miss Hanan Hussen (Secretary) - all of whom are marketing students at Second Avenue Campus. They were accompanied by lecturer and Society Co-ordinators Mr. Tembelihle Yase & Prof Felix Amoah, HOD of the Department of Marketing Management.

In the engagement session, the executive team interacted with learners of Lungisa High School through motivational discussions and speeches. Topics covered included the importance of education, maintaining focus throughout high school, and creating awareness about university and career opportunities within the field of marketing. Thereafter, Miss Khan officially handed over the donation of Sanitary Pads to the Principal of Lungisa High School, Mr Thabo Mapena.

The handover was warmly received by the principal, staff and learners of Lungisa High School. The initiative reflects the Marketing Society’s commitment to corporate social responsibility through meaningful community upliftment initiatives aim at supporting previously disadvantaged peri urban communities.

Through initiatives such as these, the Marketing Society continues to uphold the values of leadership, ubuntu, service, and community development within Nelson Mandela University and beyond. Appreciation is extended to all NMU departments, staff, students, and external organisations, including Clicks Group Boardwalk and Nasruddin Islamic High School, for their generous donations and support towards this worthy cause.

The Department of Marketing Management is proud of our students in their involvement with community engagement.

The TRC at 30: the scream continues

South Africa’s gender-based violence crisis is rooted in apartheid’s unspoken trauma, not policy failure alone, Templeton Prize laureate Professor Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela argued in a landmark recent Freedom Month lecture at Nelson Mandela University in Gqeberha.

Her argument has implications that go well beyond the academic debate held on 23 April 2026. If Prof Gobodo-Madikizela is correct, then every declaration of a national crisis and every institutional commitment to transformation that stops short of confronting apartheid’s inherited violence is not only inadequate but is itself a form of the evasion it claims to oppose.

“There’s a lot of talk and less action,” she said in a post-lecture discussion, spelling out what it would mean concretely for a president who has declared gender-based violence a national crisis to demonstrate that commitment where it matters most.

“What are you doing in these communities where these stories are happening?” she asked, suggesting tangible interventions such as “increase constant police presence in this area, lighting up the streets to improve safety, and starting programmes in vulnerable environments where women can seek safety.”
