This is the official page of SASCO; Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. The South African Student Congress (SASCO) was formed in September 1991 at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, through the merger of the South African National Student Congress (SANSCO) and the National Union of South African Students (NUSAS). The predecessor of SANSCO, the Azanian Students Organisatio

n (AZASO) was initially formed in 1979 as a continuation of the South African Students Organisation (SASO) when the latter was banned by the Apartheid government. SASO, in turn, got started by Steve Biko as a breakaway faction rom NUSAS in the 1960s. Today, SASCO is the biggest student movement in Africa. It organizes students in institutions of higher learning striving for the transformation of not just institutions of higher learning but the whole system in order to achieve a non-sexist, non-racial, working class biased and democratic education system. It seeks to ensure the destruction of capitalist relations of production and the ushering of a socialist society. It champions the interests of students and seeks to ensure access and success in these institutions, by fighting for (1) more and better accommodation, (2) more computer labs, (3) more and better equipped libraries, (4) lower costs of education etc. SASCO achieves seeks to achieve these through mobilizing the broadest sections of students and rallying them behind the call for FREE HIGHER EDUCATION.

🚨URGENT MMS PETITION 🚨

The South African Students Congress leadership met with management earlier today in regards with the MMS issue.

The Dean of Students, Director of Students Governance together with financial Aid will be making submissions to MANCO tomorrow morning regarding the long standing MMS issue that seeks to have students allowances being transferred from MMS to INTELLI.

We proposed in that meeting that a petition must be submitted to MANCO to ensure the situation is taken seriously.

We urge all students affected by MMS to utilize the link below and sign the petition that will be submitted to MANCO tomorrow morning. Share the link.

The South African Students Congress wishes all students the best of luck on their end of semester exams.

We remind students that no amount of ashwagandha, energy drinks and bio plus will supersede hard work and smart studying.

The Students Congress unequivocally supports Lebo Nare as an Alumni Representative to university council.

We lobby all graduates of the institution to rally and put all their weight behind the name of Lebo Nare as he is capable of making the organ of council a breathing one.

The Students Congress embarked on a res visit today at Lillian Ngoyi residence to note done and seek to tackle their long standing issues.

SASCO shares the same sentiments with students regarding their MMS allowances being paid in full for this month as many students rely on those funds to go back home for recess.

We also noted the issue of the flawed and unreliable laundry system that inconveniences students with many cases of misplaced clothing items in many cases.

Lastly, we have also noted the state of hygiene in the bathrooms and dilapidated windows in some instances.

Additionally, SASCO has already started escalating the matters and has add on the submissions we have already submitted as negotiations regarding MMS are already on the pipeline.

Hasta la Victoria Siempre!

SASCO notes the recent email acknowledging receipt of the issues we raised during the 2 day protest.

Management for the first time in history has listened to student organizations. As we have said in our previous statement that Summerstrand shuttles will be reinstated from Monday the 25th of May.

Students who have been defunded will not be evicted from their residences and we will closely monitor the issue of MMS funds to be made fully available to students.

We were ready to have some dance lessons with management on the Africa Day celebration stage if they did not send the email by 13:00.

This is a scientific but necessary victory for the entire student populace. Lastly, Summerstrand students must stop behaving like slay queens and learn to fight for their rights.

Negotiations Update

SASCO with various student organizations have met management in regards with the issues we were raising during the protest.

They have agreed that the Summerstrand Shuttle Route will be reinstated and a memo will be issued out today. But because we know this tactics from management we will continue to protest and occupy the streets until we see the memo.

Other issues like MMS, Shuttle stickers for unfunded students and the eviction of defunded students will be discussed in due time.

This is a victory for the entire student populace. More updates to follow.

The South African Students Congress is disgusted by the arrogant and aloof conduct of management in engaging with student organizations when dealing with issues.

Management is proving day by day that they are collectively a useless entity with nothing fruitfull to offer. After the most recent events we are of the sober speculation that the dumbing down of certain directors and departments is a deliberate ploy concocted somewhere on the last floor of embizweni building.

Over the past few months we have been trying to engage management through physically meeting them and sending emails like mad men but instead it feels as if we are engaging arrogant headless chickens with no sense of urgency and direction.

It must be known that we have exhausted all channels and mediums of engaging management on a number of issues yet our cries are commodified by gluttonous people while leaving the latter to suffer.

We want the shuttle route reinstated not later than soon. We are calling upon all students of Summerstrand to physically fight for themselves and demand the Summerstrand shuttle route be reinstated.

They must be reminded that stones change status quos faster than folks. We will meet were it matters the most.

The Students Congress has just concluded it's political class of Umrhabulo were we convened under the topic: The role of student organizations in dealing with today's socio-economic issues.

The program was facilitated by CANRAD through Katlego who has done well in setting the scene and guiding the discussion of the day.

The session was addressed by former leaders of the organization Cde Siviwe & Manelisi Klaas who dissected and unravelled the theme for what it is.

We thank all students and comrades who availed themselves as we will be having more of this sessions.
