The Rock and Surf Super Pro League (RASSPL) is a competitive rock and surf angling league in South Africa that brings together skilled anglers from different regions ( Border Blacktips, Kowie Crackers, Western Province Bronzies, Eastern Province Raggies, Overberg Kobbies, Southern Cape Great Whites) to compete in structured fishing tournaments.

The league promotes sportsmanship, conservation, and the development of angling as a professional and recreational sport. Competitions are usually held along various coastal locations, where participants fish from the shoreline using rock and surf fishing techniques to target different species of fish. Each franchise fishes a league season comprising of 8 competitions. At the end of the season the top 12 registered members from each franchise makes up their respective franchises’ “A” teams and numbers 13 to 24 make up the respective development teams. Both the A and development teams then compete against one another at a national’s tournament at the end of the season where the top 12 anglers from nationals are then selected to represent the South African A team and 13 to 24 make up the South African development team to compete against Namibia and Angola at the international tournament.

As a registered EP Raggies member, Mr Mohamed Hassan ended the season in 5th position going into nationals. At nationals Mr Mohamed competed against 121 other anglers from the various franchises. He was able to win the nationals tournament and crowned nationals champion. He was further selected for the South African A side based on my season ranking and nationals ranking.

Based on these rankings he was ranked the number 1 RASSPL angler in South Africa to compete against Namibia and Angola at the internationals tournament to be held in Struisbaai, South Africa in 2027.

Very well done Mr Hassan Mohamed on your great achievement, we are very proud of you🥳

On Saturday, April 17, 2026, the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day initiative held a colourful gathering of Knitwits at the newly renovated St George’s Park Conservatory.

Representing the academic community, Mrs. Tania Shrosbree (Faculty of Business and Economic Sciences) and Dr. Leizel Williams (Faculty of Sciences) contributed balls of wool and hand-crocheted blankets to the cause. This global and national movement provides essential warmth to the vulnerable during the winter, with Saturday’s specific donations dedicated to an initiative supporting women and children in need.

The event fostered a strong sense of community, as members of the public and various organisations gathered for a picnic to connect and continue crafting future donations.

On 5 May 2026, the Faculty of Business and Economic Sciences had the privilege of attending the Archbishop Thabo Makgoba Lecture on Values-Based Leadership — a powerful and thought-provoking engagement on ethical leadership and the role it plays in shaping inclusive, just societies.

The 2026 lecture centred on the theme of ethical leadership and women’s economic empowerment, challenging us to reimagine institutions and economies that prioritise accountability, social justice, and meaningful inclusion. The keynote address offered deep insight into the responsibilities of leaders in navigating complex socio-economic realities, emphasising integrity, purpose, and impact.

A highlight of the evening for our faculty was the respondence by Dr Jasmine Kinsman, Head of Business Management, whose reflections thoughtfully engaged the keynote and extended the conversation into the academic and practical realities of leadership. Her respondence underscored the importance of values-driven leadership within business education and practice, reinforcing the role of institutions in cultivating responsible, ethical leaders for the future.

The Faculty of Business and Economic Sciences extend our sincere congratulations and appreciation to Dr Kinsman for her insightful contribution, and to all involved in hosting such a meaningful platform for dialogue and reflection.

The Missionvale Career Day was successfully hosted on 21 March 2026 at the Missionvale Care Centre Community Hall. This was then followed by a second Career Day held in Motherwell, forming part of a collaborative initiative between New Heaven and New Earth Church, its volunteer arm, and a representative from the Nelson Mandela University Faculty of Business and Economic Sciences, Mr Andrews. The Motherwell Career Day was hosted at a local church in an open field area.

The first event took place in Missionvale, where just over 60 community members were in attendance. The second event in Motherwell attracted just over 50 community members.
Both events were well received by participants, who engaged actively throughout the sessions and responded positively to the practical, interactive format. Participants showed strong appreciation for the accessible and relatable way in which information was shared, particularly around entrepreneurship and personal development opportunities.

Mr Andrews’ communication and guidance were especially well received. Participants responded positively to his clear explanations regarding study options, faculty offerings, and the university application process. Many noted that the information was easy to understand and relevant to their circumstances, and they appreciated the step-by-step guidance on when and how to apply, as well as the available support for prospective students.
