The event recognised the commitment and contributions of our peer mentors, who play an important role in supporting fellow students throughout their academic journey. The ceremony provided an opportunity to acknowledge their involvement in the programme and celebrate their achievements.

Faculty Public Lecture | Panel Discussion Highlights

The Department of Public Health, within the Faculty of Health Sciences, hosted an insightful panel discussion on “Strengthening transdisciplinary research to address national and regional health priorities.”

The discussion brought together experts from different disciplines to explore how collaborative, transdisciplinary research can help address pressing health challenges and strengthen research that responds to the needs of our communities.

Thank you to our panellists, Prof Paula Melariri, Prof Syden Mishi, Prof Darelle van Greunen and Prof Liesl Zühlke, and moderator Dr Reno Morar, for contributing to this important conversation.

Faculty Public Lecture | Morning Highlights

The Department of Public Health hosted Prof Liesl Zühlke this morning for a public lecture titled “Leaving No One Behind: Congenital and Rheumatic Heart Disease as a Lens on Comprehensive Health Services.”

The lecture highlighted the importance of comprehensive, inclusive health services and the need to address gaps in healthcare to ensure that no one is left behind.

The programme continues this afternoon with a panel discussion exploring how transdisciplinary research can address national and regional health priorities.

Environmental Health First-Year Pledge Ceremony | 2026

The Department of Environmental Health recently welcomed its first-year students to an important milestone in their journey as future Environmental Health professionals.

The 2026 Environmental Health First-Year Pledge Ceremony, saw students pledge to uphold the values of Nelson Mandela University, the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Department of Environmental Health as they begin their academic and professional journey.

The ceremony marked a meaningful step as our students commit themselves to the values, responsibilities and standards of their chosen profession.

🏆 Congratulations to Mr Zane Gysman, recipient of the Head of Department’s Award for Top Environmental Health Student! Zane also graduated cm laude in April 2026, an outstanding achievement that reflects his dedication and academic excellence.

One Week to Go ! | Faculty Public Lecture & Panel Discussion

The Faculty of Health Sciences is pleased to share the upcoming Faculty Public Lecture hosted by the Department of Public Health, followed by a panel discussion exploring the role of transdisciplinary research in addressing national and regional health priorities.

The Faculty Public Lecture, “Leaving No One Behind: Congenital and Rheumatic Heart Disease as a Lens on Comprehensive Health Services,” will be delivered by Prof. Liesl Zühlke on 16 October 2026 at Missionvale Campus.

The afternoon will continue with a panel discussion, “Strengthening Transdisciplinary Research at Nelson Mandela University to Address National and Regional Health Priorities,” taking place at the Ocean Sciences Campus.

Both events will be available in person and online.
