A Mechatronics student from Nelson Mandela University’s Faculty of Engineering, the Built Environment and Technology (EBET), Vuyani Chipunza, has achieved an exciting milestone by securing first place in the Openserve challenge at the SATNAC 2026 Industry Challenge with his innovation, NeedleMover AI.

The achievement highlights the creativity, technical expertise and innovative thinking of EBET students, who continue to explore solutions with the potential to address real-world challenges.

In addition to receiving the award, Chipunza had the opportunity to appear live on SABC, where he shared insights into his innovation and reflected on this significant achievement.

His accomplishment is a proud moment for the Faculty and demonstrates the importance of creating opportunities for students to apply their knowledge, develop innovative ideas and engage with industry.

The Faculty of Engineering, the Built Environment and Technology congratulates Vuyani Chipunza on this outstanding achievement and wishes him continued success as he advances his innovation.

Through laboratory tours, project showcases and engaging discussions, attendees experienced first-hand how Nelson Mandela University is preparing future engineers to solve real-world challenges while strengthening connections between industry and academia.

Alumni Tech Trails | Sive Buhe.

From taking her first step in a call center to assuring quality for South Africa’s largest e-commerce platform, Sive’s career reflects rapid technical evolution, self-driven learning and a passion for engineering excellence.

After graduating in 2019, Sive briefly began her career at a Telkom call center before seizing an opportunity as a Software Development Intern at Dignity Group in East London. There, she developed internal business solutions including an automated employee attendance, time and location system. Moving to Gqeberha in 2021, she transitioned into quality engineering at Batsamayi, where she tested APIs and user interfaces across four client products for LexisNexis—a pivotal shift that ignited her specialization in software testing.

Today, Sive serves as a QA Test Analyst at Takealot, where she plays a critical role in maintaining the reliability of high-volume e-commerce and logistics systems. Her expertise spans API testing, integration testing, test automation, test management, and scalable quality engineering practices.

A self-taught API testing specialist, Sive masterfully adapted her software development background into QA by mastering Postman and API frameworks independently. Beyond her technical scope, she has become a core domain expert at Takealot, driving test coverage improvements and mentoring new engineers through the onboarding process.

Guided by the words of Mahatma Gandhi, Sive believes:
"Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever."

Her journey demonstrates how technical curiosity, rapid adaptability, and continuous learning can transform an early opportunity into a key engineering leadership role within South Africa's tech sector.
