Last week, despite the challenging weather in Gqeberha, we were proud to host a successful Masterclass and Public Lecture as part of the 2026 Archbishop Thabo Makgoba Annual Lecture Series on Values-Based Leadership.

We extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who attended and contributed to these important conversations on ethical leadership, institutional accountability, and women’s economic empowerment. Your presence and engagement reaffirm the importance of creating spaces for courageous, values-driven dialogue.

Led by Dr Futhi Mtoba, the sessions challenged us to reimagine inclusive economies and institutions, reminding us that ethical leadership is not abstract, but a lived responsibility embedded in the decisions we make and the systems we shape.

A special thank you to our respondents, Ms Dante Hilton, Dr Dikeledi Mokoena, and Dr Jasmine Kinsman, for their insightful reflections and contributions that enriched the discussion.

Thank you for showing up and for being part of advancing a more just and inclusive society.

Fund Resilience, Not Disasters!

As Raymond Mhlaba Centre for Governance and Leadership at Nelson Mandela University, we would like to thank the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, Eastern Cape Provincial Disaster Management Centre, and Old Mutual Foundation for partnering with us for the 2025 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) Provincial Seminar, held at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on 16 October 2025.

This important engagement brought together government, academia, and business, including Stenden South Africa, Volkswagen SA, and the ARISE Network, under the theme “Fund Resilience, Not Disasters.” The dialogue focused on how policy, collaboration, and innovation can strengthen disaster resilience in communities and businesses.

This initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to advancing research, capacity building, and innovation in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) across the Eastern Cape Province. We are also proud to announce the upcoming launch of our Short Learning Programme on Disaster Management.

A special appreciation goes to Mr. Mosekama Osia Mokhele, our Research Associate from the Department of Public Management and Leadership at the university, who presented at the seminar, our Director, Dr. Ongama Mtimka, PhD, who co-facilitated the session; and all colleagues from the university who supported us throughout this engagement.

Together, we are driving knowledge, collaboration, and resilience for safer communities.

Reflecting on Purposeful Leadership and Africa’s Renewal

Prof Wiseman Lumkile Nkuhlu, Former Chairman of KPMG South Africa, delivered a deeply reflective and challenging address during the Raymond Mhlaba Institutional Public Lecture on 14 October 2025 at Nelson Mandela University.

Speaking under the theme “Embracing the Purposeful Leadership of Comrade Raymond Mhlaba’s Generation: A Call for Today’s Leaders,” Prof Nkuhlu explored how structural governance weaknesses and the erosion of ethical leadership have undermined post-apartheid progress. Framing his lecture as a heartfelt intergenerational conversation with Oom Ray, he reflected on whether today’s leaders have lived up to the ideals of Mhlaba’s generation.

Drawing from his book Purposeful Leadership for Africa in the 21st Century, Prof Nkuhlu called for a renewed commitment to education, ethics, and scientific advancement, urging that Africa, like Asia, harness knowledge, innovation, and integrity to drive transformation.

The lecture also featured insightful responses from Thabi Nkosi, businesswoman and agricultural economist, and Fundiswa Skweyiya, independent researcher and television show host. The discussion was facilitated by economist and strategist Xhanti Payi, and attended by the University’s executive leadership, including Vice-Chancellor Prof Sibongile Muthwa and Executive Dean of Humanities Prof Pamela Maseko.

Earlier in the day, Prof Nkuhlu engaged postgraduate students in a Masterclass titled “The Africa–Asia Paradox: Why Have Abundant Resources and Rich Culture Not Driven Post-Colonial Economic Transformation in Africa?” where he highlighted the importance of science, technology, and ethical governance in shaping Africa’s development.

Through these two engagements, Raymond Mhlaba Centre for Governance and Leadership continued its mission to inspire purposeful and ethical leadership that honours the legacy of Raymond Mhlaba and advances Africa’s path toward renewal and justice.
