NWU Faculty of Theology

NWU Faculty of Theology Welkom by die blad van die Fakulteit Teologie van die NWU. Welcome to the page of the Faculty of Theology from the NWU.

Theology on Reformational foundation
The Faculty of Theology of the North-West University rests on a Reformational foundation. In this way it recognises its historical links with the Reformation of the 16th and 17th centuries, with the Theological School of the RCSA and with the PU for CHE in the period 1869 to 2004. The Reformational foundation implies recognition that the Word of God, the Bible,

originated through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and that it is authoritative. In our practice of Theology as a science, we recognise and respect the Reformed view of God and the written Word of God as the particular revelation of God. The Bible – the particular revelation of God, in addition to his revelation in creation – constitutes the object of scientific study. Teaching-learning, research and the application of expertise are conducted on this revelation and in the light thereof, through the illuminating work of the Holy Spirit. The kingship of God, owing to its primary position and significance in the Bible, is regarded as the orientational foundation on which Theology is practised. This Reformational foundation and ethos entail a constant analytical, critical and Reformational scientific study of all paradigms (including our own), as well as the study of other theological paradigms and traditions, while accommodating staff members and students of other theological persuasions who respect the Reformational foundation and inclusive approach of the Faculty of Theology. Application of the foundation
In its practice of Theology, the aim of the Faculty, within the unique nature of Theology, is to serve the church and society, both nationally and internationally, through the enhancement of the Christian faith, the reformation of the church, and the moral renewal of society. Therefore we present theological training and equipment of high academic standard, as agreed with specific denominations. According to the policy of the NWU, qualification programmes are presented to persons who wish to become professional theologians or who need theological and/or classic academic training for other professions, such as teachers, counsellors, psychologists and researchers. In the development of South African society, the Faculty accepts its responsibility to provide Reformational perspectives and make a significant contribution to meet the needs and wants of our society, based upon the expertise of its researches, according to the research policy of the Faculty. The Faculty’s national and international relations and its special links and cooperation agreements with a number of other theological institutions as well as individual theologians in other traditions testify to its scientific openness, inclusiveness and critical approach. The Faculty of Theology puts a premium on regular national, international and professional assessment and evaluation of the academic standard and relevance of the Theology practised in the Faculty and embodied in its qualification programmes. The practice of Theology and the teaching-learning and research in the Faculty are adaptable and open to criticism, and pursue effective and positive changes and developments. This adaptability and receptiveness apply not only to methodological and epistemological aspects but also to the application of scientific methods and technology.

A heartfelt goodbye to Mrs Antoinett Moerdyk

On Friday, 29 May, the Faculty of Theology gathered on the Potchefstroom Campus to celebrate Antoinett and her 27 years of dedication to the NWU - North-West University. Since the 1990s, Antoinett has been a pillar of support for both students and staff, and it is with mixed feelings that we bid her farewell as she enters a new phase of her life in retirement with her husband.

With bittersweet memories we would like to thank Antoinett for what she has meant for the Faculty over the years. Your absence will be felt as your meticulous nature served to gather the ties others did not even notice existed. Your empathetic approach yet stern attention to detail and immaculate sense of duty will be remembered.

We look forward with you to this well-deserved new adventure and wish you and your husband many years of health and happiness!

The Focus Area: Ancient Texts: Text, Context and Reception (FA) held its workshop on Thursday 21 May 2026, where permanent staff members attended both physically and virtually, allowing for inclusive participation and engagement. Contributions towards the improvement plan of the FA was one of the main items of discussion. The morning was filled with insightful discussions and fresh ideas shared by long-serving employees, retired colleagues, and upcoming researchers, all contributing meaningfully towards the growth and betterment of the focus area. The workshop created a collaborative platform for knowledge sharing, reflection, all contributing to planning for the future. In addition, the M and D office provided a detailed overview of their roles, while the Info-Ed outputs office provided important information on to researchers on recording of the publication processes and the important requirements thereof, offering valuable clarity and guidance to attendees.

As we continue with the rest of the academic year, we trust our work will have an impact in the disciplines associated with our focus area, in our communities, in South Africa and even up to the four corners of the globe. Appreciation goes to all institutional structures of support in the NWU, as well as to all the academic staff who are the drivers of research in the Focus Area.

Wishing all members of the Focus Area wisdom, resilience, good health, and success for the months ahead.

🎓 Growing Together as Leaders!

On Saturday, 18 April 2026, the Student Academic Chapters (SAC) of the Faculty of Theology held their third annual Intercampus Meeting at the Potchefstroom Campus — and what a meaningful day it was! 🙌

SAC leaders from all three NWU campuses gathered to connect, grow, and lead together under the theme of the Leadership Compass. The day featured inspiring sessions on leadership development, self-understanding, group dynamics, vision, and practical project and performance management — equipping our student leaders to serve their campus communities even better.

A heartfelt thank you to our Executive Dean, Prof. Risimati Hobyane, for hosting the event, and to our excellent facilitators and presenters — Mrs. Juan-Ri Schutte, Mr. Leroux Malan, and Prof. Alfred Brunsdon. We also extend our gratitude to our Faculty Guardians, Prof. Elma Cornelius and Dr. Thabang Mofokeng, and everyone else who made the day possible. 💜
