Welcome to the rainbow nation!
If you’re looking to experience something completely new, different and exciting, a land full of different cultures and traditions; South Africa is where you should be heading!
This country really takes your breath, let’s you breathe in deeply and enjoy its diverse natural landscapes, a priceless wildlife heritage and the elusive Big Five that wander through the luminous savannah.
In Potchefstroom you will have the opportunity to experience study life the South-African way. In my case this meant living directly on campus in a charming house with a big garden together with other foreign students. The campus is immense and up until know I don’t think I would be able to figure out which building is used by which faculty. But you will quickly get used to it and your fellow students will be happy to help you finding your way! Classes are held in Afrikaans (the language of the white South African population) but translated to English. Depending on the subjects you take, you will be surrounded by up to two hundred other students and I found it pleasant how lively it can get and that the male-female percentage of students is about balanced out. Much of the learning matter is related to the country which makes you learn a lot about its history and the way things are done here.
Potchefstroom itself is a student town and unlike other bigger cities in South Africa it is completely safe to walk around in the surrounding areas. If you follow a few rules given by the locals you won’t have to worry about anything! There are lots of bars, restaurants and also clubs where you can have a good time for little money and also eat some of the best meat in the world! It is also an ideal location to venture out and explore the rest of the country- from national parks to lively big cities there is a lot to see! So be prepared to drive on the ‘wrong’ side of the road and don’t forget your sleeping bag and hiking shoes!
I would definitely recommend this experience to anyone prepared to step out of their comfort zone and willing to experience South Africa to its fullest.
