Breaking barriers to malaria elimination through collaboration and innovation! 🦟🔬

This evening, we are attending the Vice-Chancellor’s 38th University of Pretoria Expert Lecture at Future Africa where Prof Lyn-Marie Birkholtz is delivering a talk titled “Breaking barriers to malaria elimination: Transdisciplinary research in action to deliver health innovations against malaria.”

Prof Birkholtz is the SARChI Chair in Sustainable Malaria Control Chair and Head of the Parasite Control Cluster of the UP Institute for Sustainable Malaria Control (UP ISMC).

We are incredibly proud of Prof Birkholtz and congratulate her on this prestigious opportunity to share her leadership, expertise and contributions to malaria research! 👏

Her work highlights an important message: malaria elimination requires more than scientific discovery. It calls for transdisciplinary collaboration, innovative thinking and translating research into meaningful health impact.

🎶🦟 What does malaria sound like?
For , the UP Institute for Sustainable Malaria Control is celebrating an unusual collaboration with UP’s School of the Arts: Music.
Four undergraduate music students were challenged to use malaria as inspiration for original compositions. The result? Four very different musical interpretations - taking malaria from science into sound and exploring a creative new way to reach audiences beyond traditional malaria awareness spaces.

🦟 World Mosquito Day highlights the importance of understanding mosquitoes and preventing mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria. On this day we celebrate the people and science behind the fight against this killer disease.

This year is also a special one for the UP Institute for Sustainable Malaria Control (UP ISMC), which celebrates 15 years of research, innovation, education and impact.

To mark this milestone, researchers, students, alumni, collaborators and partners gathered at UP’s Future Africa campus to celebrate the Institute’s journey, reflect on its achievements and look towards the next chapter.

From vector control and parasite research to drug discovery, environmental health, geospatial science and health promotion, the UP ISMC’s work demonstrates the breadth of expertise needed to tackle malaria.

On this World Mosquito Day, we invite you to celebrate with us – not only the work being done to understand and control malaria, but the people, partnerships and research that have shaped 15 years of the UP ISMC.

This International Youth Day, we explore how food can become a creative bridge between science, culture and health promotion; helping make malaria messages more meaningful and engaging for young people, the “missing middle”.

Presented during the Advanced Leadership Programme for the Elimination of Malaria (ALPEM) Module 3, the food-based experience challenged malaria leaders to think differently about who they are communicating with, what matters to their audiences, and how best to reach them on the journey towards malaria elimination.

🍽️ From mosquito breeding and prevention to testing, treatment and recovery, food became the starting point for conversation, learning and engagement.

Different contexts. Common aspirations. One shared goal: a malaria-free future.
