The Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences is one of the largest Faculties at the University of Pretoria.

The Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences at the University of Pretoria is the first faculty of its kind in Africa to be accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. The Faculty aims to continuously strengthen its position as the leading institution in the fields of economic, financial and management sciences through its academic and research excellence. At the same time the Faculty remains committed to delivering competent, creative, responsible and productive citizens – the “Thought Leaders” of the University of Pretoria and South Africa’s future business leaders.

𝗕𝗔𝗖𝗞-𝗧𝗢-𝗕𝗔𝗖𝗞 𝗕𝗘𝗦𝗧 𝗛𝗥 𝗦𝗧𝗨𝗗𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗔𝗪𝗔𝗥𝗗𝗦 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗨𝗣

A hearty congratulations to Oratile Mathe, a final-year BCom Human Resource Management student at the University of Pretoria (UP), who has been named the 2026 Marius Meyer SAHRUF / SABPP Best HR Student in South Africa, earning a R20 000 cash prize and a Juta Prize voucher.

The prestigious award recognises the country’s top-performing HR students, with only one final-year student nominated by each participating university. This year, Oratile represented UP against nominees from eight institutions – and emerged as the national winner.

She is the second UP student to claim this national award for two consecutive years, reflecting the Department’s continued commitment to academic excellence and developing future-ready HR professionals.

Congratulations to University of Pretoria Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences alumna Amy Wallace on being awarded the prestigious Anton & Huberte Rupert Bursary for 2026!

Awarded by the Rupert Foundation, this bursary recognises exceptional academic achievers who have received the Vice-Chancellor’s Medal and are pursuing postgraduate research studies at the University of Pretoria.

The bursary provides financial support towards tuition, research, travel and living expenses, enabling recipients to advance their academic and research ambitions.

Amy's achievement is a testament to her academic dedication and excellence, reflecting the calibre of students who continue to make our Faculty proud.

👏👏👏 Celebrating EMS Research Milestones

We are proud of our three academics, Professors Elizabeth Ann du Preez, Astrid Schmulian and Melanie Wiese, on their National Research Foundation (NRF) re-ratings.

They have been re-rated as follows:

• Prof Elizabeth Ann du Preez: Y2 → C2
• Prof Astrid Schmulian: C3 → C2
• Prof Melanie Wiese: C2 → C1

The NRF ratings provide peer-reviewed recognition of a researcher’s standing and research track record. Prof du Preez’s progression from Y2 to C2 marks her transition from a promising young researcher to an established researcher. Prof Schmulian’s move from C3 to C2 reflects progression within the established researcher category, while Prof Wiese’s advancement from C2 to C1 places her in the highest subcategory of the C rating.

These achievements reflect sustained research excellence, scholarly contribution, and recognition by peers in their respective fields.

👏 Celebrating Global Excellence in Internal Auditing👏

Congratulations to Karabo Mtileni, a BCom Honours student specialising in Internal Auditing, on claiming the top spot in the prestigious Larry B. Sawyer Student Scholarship awarded by the Institute of Internal Auditors.

Karabo received a cash prize of $5 000, while the University of Pretoria's Department of Auditing, where she is enrolled, received a $2 000 award.

The proud University of Pretoria Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) student was selected from 70 students from across the globe who applied for the scholarship. As part of the application, students were required to submit a three- to five-minute video explaining their interest in pursuing a career in internal auditing and the value the scholarship would add to their developing careers. Karabo’s submission impressed the judges with its creativity, clarity, compelling message and thoughtful ex*****on.
Her achievement continues an impressive track record of success for UP students in this prestigious scholarship.

Since 2024, UP students have claimed third prize in 2024, first and third prize in 2025, and another first prize in 2026.

🏆Historic Win for EMS!🏆

A hearty congratulations to Dr Corlia Joynt of the Department of Accounting on being named one of only six winners of the 2026 National University Teaching Awards (NUTA). These awards recognise innovative teaching and learning in higher education at a national level.

This achievement marks a historic milestone, as Dr Joynt is the 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗡𝗨𝗧𝗔 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿 from the University of Pretoria. For Dr Joynt, the recognition ultimately comes back to the students at the heart of her work:

“This award may carry my name, but its meaning belongs to my students. Their resilience, perseverance, and willingness to keep going remind me every day why teaching matters,” she says.

The gap between a degree and a career is where the real work happens. To bridge that gap, the University of Pretoria Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences and its Faculty house, Commercii, recently hosted a Youth Employability panel discussion that unpacked how young people can better position themselves for success in the world of work.

🏆 The University of Pretoria Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences(EMS) has once again demonstrated its accounting excellence in the latest 2026 SSAICA - The South African Institute of Chartered AccountantsInitial Assessment of Competency results released recently. UUniversity of Pretoria(UP) candidates who sat for this professional exam achieved a stellar pass rate of 96%.

Prof Margaret Chitiga-Mabugu, Dean of the Faculty of EMS, remarked on our performance: “A 96% pass rate is a testament not only to academic excellence, but also to our ongoing commitment to transformation and inclusion within the accountancy profession.
We are particularly encouraged by the continued success and growth of our diverse student cohort, as we work to expand access and create opportunities for future chartered accountants from all backgrounds. These results demonstrate that excellence and transformation can, and must, go hand in hand.”
