As we count down to the 4th Universities South Africa(USAf) Higher Education Conference, we’ll be introducing some of the speakers who will bring their insights, experience and perspectives to the conference.

Over the coming weeks, look out for our Meet the Speakers series as we showcase the people and conversations that will help us explore the challenges, opportunities and future of South African higher education.

We are delighted to announce that one of the esteemed presenters will be Professor Ellen Hazelkorn speaking to: “The Public University in a Market Age: Preserving Public Value While Achieving Financial Sustainability.”

Prof Hazelkorn is internationally recognized as an expert across further and higher education policy and system and institutional governance, leadership and management; human capital and skills development and analysis; national and institutional systems of evaluation and rankings, quality assurance and accreditation; and science and innovation policy.

She is joint managing partner BH Associates education consultants, and Professor Emerita, Technological University Dublin, Ireland. She is Joint Editor of Policy Reviews in Higher Education (2018).

Dr Pedro Mzileni, will be part of the conversation on how universities can respond meaningfully to South Africa’s complex social and economic realities.

Dr Pedro Mzileni is a scholar, researcher and higher education commentator whose work brings together questions of transformation, equity and social justice. Dr Mzileni will contribute his insights to conversations about the role of higher education in advancing the public good, challenging persistent inequalities and building a more inclusive and responsive sector.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS: SECTOR SCAN ON THE FUTURE OF WORK AND FUTURE SKILLS IN SOUTH AFRICAN HIGHER

Universities South Africa (USAf) invites suitably qualified and experienced service providers to submit proposals for the appointment of a service provider to conduct a sector-wide scan on the Future of Work and Future Skills in South African higher education.

The envisaged project will identify, consolidate and analyse existing research, institutional initiatives and areas of expertise, map relevant capabilities across the public university sector, and consult key stakeholders.

The findings will establish an evidence base for broader sector engagement and inform the development of a practical sector framework or roadmap.

4th USAf Higher Education Conference: Co-creating a Resilient Future

Universities South Africa (USAf) will host its 4th Higher Education Conference from 7–9 October 2026 at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. CSIR International Convention Center in Pretoria, with hybrid participation available.

The conference takes place under the theme: “Co-creating a Resilient Future.”

The theme recognises that resilience in higher education extends beyond responding to disruption. It calls for institutions to renew, reimagine and strengthen their collective capacity to shape a future that is equitable, sustainable and responsive to society’s needs.

The 2026 conference will provide a platform for thought leadership, strategic dialogue and collaboration among leaders and stakeholders across higher education, government, industry, civil society and international partner institutions.

Discussions will consider the role of universities in navigating contemporary challenges, including technological disruption, economic uncertainty, changing societal expectations, climate change, evolving labour markets, and the continued pursuit of equity and inclusion.
