In the Q3 2026 Human-Centred Studio: Circular Design and Value Cocreation, Honours students explored how architecture can contribute to more sustainable and circular ways of living in Hatfield.

Moving beyond material reuse and resource efficiency, the studio encouraged students to consider architecture as part of interconnected social, ecological, material and urban systems. Students developed context-responsive circular hubs designed to support activities such as sharing, repair, reuse, learning and stewardship, while investigating the role of architecture within the wider relationships, resources and everyday practices that shape urban life.

Theory formed an integral part of the design process. Circular design, service-dominant logic, service design and servicescape theory informed students' investigations into how the built environment can support processes of value cocreation and contribute to more adaptable urban environments.

Storying the Landscape opens at the University of Pretoriaโ€™s Mamelodi Campus on 20 October 2026.

The exhibition presents work in progress from the project, sharing findings to date while also creating a space to gather further input and test emerging interpretations. The longer-term aim is to develop a lexicon and repository of South African landscape-related stories, terms, typologies and practices.

Community research workshops will also take place on 20 and 22 October, from 11:00โ€“13:00. We welcome those interested in the project to visit, engage with the work and contribute to the ongoing research.

Another exciting cash-only book sale is around the corner. Find the AAUP book sale stand in Boukunde's entrance foyer at the Gawie Fagan exhibition. Brand new books as well as a great selection of second hand books and journals are up for grabs. Bring cash so that you don't leave empty-handed. Prinsloo recently returned from England, where he co-hosted, with Gareth Polmeer (Royal College of Art) and the Cambridge Centre for the Study of Platonism, a conference entitled Of Soil and Soul: The Garden in Christian Platonism. The event was held in the beautiful surroundings of Clare College, Cambridge.

Designing for Local Impact, the fourth edition of the National Student Timber Design Competition has launched.

Students are invited to develop an architectural or structural proposal in which timber is used as the primary construction material, with a clear response to a South African social, environmental, spatial or cultural context. The competition is open to students in architecture, engineering and related built environment disciplines at South African higher education institutions, with individual and team entries accepted.
