In case you missed it, Professor Olalekan Ayo-Yusuf, senior author of a ground-breaking study, was on Lotus FM discussing research that found one in five children across sub-Saharan Africa is exposed to to***co smoke inside their homes.

The study, which analysed data from 29 countries, found that daily exposure to secondhand smoke is significantly associated with childhood stunting, highlighting household to***co smoke as an important child health and development concern.

Professor Ayo-Yusuf unpacked the findings and discussed why protecting children from exposure to to***co smoke at home should be a critical priority for child health and development across Africa.

From engagement to impact.

The Faculty of Health Sciences proudly hosted the Community Engagement Symposium on 8 October 2026, bringing together academics, students and community partners to explore how meaningful collaboration can translate into lasting community impact.

Through thought-provoking discussions, shared experiences, research presentations and collaborative partnerships, the symposium highlighted the value of community engagement in addressing community-identified needs and creating meaningful change.

Professor Tivani Mashamba-Thompson has been appointed Chairperson of South Africa’s National Health Research Committee (NHRC) for the 2026–2029 term, placing her in a key national leadership role in shaping the country’s health research agenda.

Building on her previous service as NHRC Vice-Chairperson, Prof. Mashamba-Thompson brings extensive expertise in health research, diagnostics, innovation and research governance.

In her new role, she will help strengthen the coordination of health research and the translation of scientific evidence into policy and improved healthcare delivery.

Congratulations to Yonwaba Mzizi, a PhD candidate at NuMeRi, on receiving the Best Abstract Award at the 21st International Conference on Radiopharmaceutical Therapy (ICRT 2026), organised by the World Association of Radiopharmaceutical and Molecular Therapy (WARMTH) in Cairo, Egypt.

Mzizi’s award-winning research, completed as part of her MSc in Medical Nuclear Sciences under the supervision of Prof. Mike Sathekge and Dr. Sipho Mdanda, focused on developing a targeted nanodelivery system using Actinium-225 (²²⁵Ac) for prostate cancer therapy.

The study explored the use of PLGA-chitosan nanoparticles functionalised with folic acid to retain ²²⁵Ac and its radioactive daughter radionuclides at the tumour site, with the potential to reduce off-target irradiation of healthy tissue and enhance the therapeutic effect of targeted alpha therapy.

Reflecting on the recognition, Mzizi described the experience as “amazing” and said being recognised on an international stage for her work has been “unbelievable”, particularly given the challenges of her master’s journey. She expressed her gratitude to her mentors and supervisors for their unwavering support.

Professor Zodwa Dlamini has been appointed to South Africa’s National Health Research Committee (NHRC) for the 2026–2029 term. Bringing her expertise in precision oncology, cancer prevention, genomics and Precision Health Equity to this national platform, Prof. Dlamini will contribute to strengthening health research priority-setting and strategy in South Africa.

The Combined Dermatology Congress 2026, hosted by the Department of Dermatology at the University of Pretoria, brought together academics, clinicians and dermatology experts from South Africa and abroad recently at the CSIR.

Held under the theme “Scientific Innovation. Clinical Excellence. Dermatology Reimagined,” the annual congress provided a platform for knowledge exchange, professional networking and engagement with the latest developments in dermatology.

As an annual academic event, the National Dermatology Congress provides university departments with an opportunity to showcase their academic standing while bringing together local and international experts to share knowledge and perspectives. As Chair of the Organising Committee, Prof. Mahlatse Kgokolo, Head of Dermatology at the University of Pretoria, also led efforts to establish partnerships with industry to support the congress.
