THE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT URGES COMMUNITIES TO REPORT ABUSE AS GBV COMMAND CENTRE RECORDS SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN CALLS

Pretoria, 18 September 2026: The Department of Social Development has recorded a significant increase in gender-based violence (GBV)-related calls to its 24-hour Gender-Based Violence Command Centre (GBVCC), amid heightened public attention on gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).

Preliminary statistics reveal that between 1 and 16 September this year, the GBV Command Centre received 6 782 calls, averaging 424 calls per day. This represents a 21 percent increase compared with the same period in August, when the Centre recorded an average of 350 calls per day.

A significant increase in calls was recorded between 13 and 16 September, when daily calls rose to approximately 500, compared with an average of 399 calls per day during the first 12 days of September. On 16 September, the Command Centre received 589 calls, the highest daily number recorded during the period under review.

The increase comes as the country remains deeply concerned about the escalating levels of violence against women and the fear experienced by women across communities. This concern has been particularly pronounced in the Ekurhuleni District in Gauteng Province, following reports that approximately nine women have been found dead in the district since last week. These incidents have further intensified calls for urgent and coordinated action to address GBVF.

While the preliminary figures indicate increased demand for the GBV Command Centre's services, further monitoring and analysis are required to determine whether this represents a sustained trend in GBV-related incidents and calls for assistance.

Gender-based violence remains a societal challenge that requires all sectors of society, including government departments, the private sector, partners and stakeholders to work together in the fight against this scourge.

The Department urges communities to report incidents of gender-based violence, speak out against abuse and actively share the GBV Command Centre's contact details with family members, friends and neighbours. Everyone has a role to play in ensuring that survivors know where to seek help and that no one suffers in silence.

The public is encouraged to take an active role in addressing GBVF in their homes, places of worship, communities and workplaces. This includes challenging cultures, attitudes and practices that perpetuate gender inequality and the abuse of vulnerable women, children, older persons and persons with disabilities, both at personal and societal level.

Members of the public can report GBV incidents and access support by contacting the Gender-Based Violence Command Centre on 0800 428 428. The GBV Command Centre can also be reached by sending a PLEASE CALL ME to 1207867 #, SMSing โ€œHELPโ€ to 31531, or contacting Skype: Helpme GBV, where professional social workers are available to provide assistance.

REPORT ABUSE. SEEK SUPPORT. SHARE THE NUMBER. YOUR ACTION COULD HELP SOMEONE ACCESS LIFE-SAVING ASSISTANCE.

๐Ÿซช๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘Break the Silence: GBV is Killing Our Sisters

โ€‹We cannot look away. Right across Ekurhulen from Kempton Park, Rhodesfield, and Olifantsfontein to neighboring areas ๐Ÿ’”women are being targeted, abused, and brutally murdered. Many of these acts stem from Gender-Based Violence (GBV)๐Ÿ’œ, where abuse at home or in relationships escalates into cold-blooded killings.

โ€‹What breaks our hearts even more is knowing that what we see in the news is only a fraction of the truth. So many stories go untold. So many women vanish without a single headline๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ˜ญ, their names fading away without justice or formal records.

โ€‹Every person has a constitutional right to life, dignity, and security. GBV๐Ÿ’œ is a human rights violation that tears communities apart, and it flourishes in silence.

โ€‹What We Are Calling For in Greenfield:
โ€‹To Our Women & Mothers: Protect yourselves and look out for your sisters. Travel in groups where possible, avoid isolated spots, stay alert, and share your locations with family when traveling. Protect your children ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘teach them to stay in groups and never trust strangers.

โ€‹To Our Men: GBV๐Ÿ’œ is not a "women's issue" ๐Ÿซฉit is a human issue, and it starts with how men treat women. End the silence. Do not shelter abusers, do not justify toxic behavior, and protect the women in our community like you would protect your own mother or daughter.

โ€‹To the Greenfield Community: Report suspicious activity immediately. If a neighbor, sister, or friend is in an abusive situation, speak up or help them connect with support before it turns into another undocumented tragedy.

โ€‹๐Ÿšจ Emergency Contacts & Helplines
โ€‹Save these numbers, share them with family, and use them immediately when you or someone you know is in danger:

โ€‹SAPS Emergency Line (Police): Call 10111 or dial 112 from any cellphone (Toll-Free).

โ€‹GBV National Command Centre (24/7): Call 0800 428 428.

โ€‹Please Call Me: *120*7867 #
โ€‹SMS Line (Persons with Disabilities): SMS "help" to 31531

โ€‹Stop Gender Violence Toll-Free Helpline: 0800 150 150

โ€‹TEARS Foundation (24/7 Assistance): Dial *134*7355 #

โ€‹Childline South Africa (Child Abuse & Safety): Call 116

โ€‹National Shelter Movement Helpline: Call 0800 001 005 or WhatsApp 082 057 8600
โ€‹

โ€‹Silence protects perpetrators, not victims. Let us stand together as Greenfield, speak life over our daughters, and fight to end GBV before another sister is lost. ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธโœจ

๐Ÿšจ ANONYMOUS INBOX: Is This True Love or Scam? ๐Ÿšจ

โ€‹Bafethu, Greenfield Editor is back in the inbox, and this story right here needs a whole emergency council meeting.

โ€‹So, one of our sisters sent a direct message asking for advice, but eish... the math is just not mathing.

โ€‹Here is the setup: Sheโ€™s been in a long-distance relationship with this guy for two full years. Two calendar years, bafethu! But she has NEVER seen his face live on camera or met him in real life. Not a single video call! Every time she tries to call on video, network issues suddenly hit him, but di-photos? Oh, he sends plenty of those! Nice gallery, zero proof.

โ€‹Now, here is where the story gets heavy: The brother has turned her into his personal Capitec ATM. Constant financial favors! โ€œEish baby, my card is swallowed,โ€ โ€œPlease send R300 for petrol,โ€

โ€œCash send me R500 for groceries.โ€

โ€‹Look, we all know this has โ€œCatfish & Scamโ€ written in bold permanent marker. But before our girl sends her last R50, the Editor is throwing it to the Greenfield community.

โ€‹What is the verdict, bafethu?
โ€‹Is he playing her like a cheap radio?
โ€‹Or is there a 1% chance this is just a very shy millionaire?

๐Ÿšจ STORYTIME FROM KANANA, GREENFIELD ๐Ÿšจ

YOH! GREENFIELD, WHAT WAS GOING ON ON THE 5TH OF SEPTEMBER? ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ

Guys, gather around because this one needs a storytime. As a concerned neighbour from Kanana, Greenfield side ya Messi Tuckshop, I honestly still cannot believe what happened. ๐Ÿ˜ญ

So apparently, our girl Tryphoce was having a proper housewarming AND birthday celebration. ๐ŸŽ‚๐Ÿ ๐Ÿฅ‚

Friends came. High-school mates came. Gifts were coming in left, right and centre. ๐ŸŽโค๏ธ The music was playing, people were dancing, food was being served, drinks were flowing ๐Ÿ‘Œ basically, the vibes were VIBING! ๐Ÿ˜‚

Now here's where the story takes a turn...
While everybody was outside enjoying themselves, some neighbours allegedly decided the party was also an opportunity to do a little โ€œshopping.โ€ ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ
Because imagine this...

You are outside with us.
You are dancing with us.
You are eating with us.
You are drinking with us.

Then somehowโ€ฆ you disappear. ๐Ÿ‘€
Next thing, people realise that gifts inside the bedroom are missing. ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐ŸŽ

And apparently, some of the neighbours were caught red-handed, and what makes the situation even crazier is that it allegedly looked like they weren't there for the first time. ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ

BUT WAIT. IT GETS WORSE.

A whole bowl of fried chicken allegedly disappeared too! ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ— why didn't they steal Cabbage since they didn't even cook it well ๐Ÿ˜’ ๐Ÿ˜ค

Not the presents AND the chicken, bathong!
So what exactly was the mission? Housewarming or house-cleaning? ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜‚

Because leaving the birthday girl and her guests outside dancing while allegedly going into someone's bedroom to take gifts is a different level of behaviour.

And honestly, the chicken is what finished me. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚
Imagine waking up the next morning and asking:
โ€œWho ate the chicken?โ€

And someone says:
โ€œNeighbourhood intelligence is still investigating.โ€ ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ

Greenfield, please behave. ๐Ÿ˜‚
A party is a party. A bedroom is a bedroom. A gift is a gift. And a bowl of chicken is NOT community property! ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ—

But seriously, letโ€™s protect each other in our neighbourhoods. If you see something suspicious, speak up and let the person affected handle it properly.

KANANA STORYTIME HAS OFFICIALLY BEGUN. ๐Ÿ‘€โ˜•๐Ÿ”ฅ
