More Learners Get Their Matric

Over 15 000 learners, who sat for the National Senior Certificate (NSC) supplementary exams, have passed matric.

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga today briefed the media in Pretoria on the results of the matric supplementary examinations, which were conducted from 17 February to 25 March.

According to the minister, 15 030 more young people have attained the NSC, which gives them what they need to further their studies.

A total of 66 105 candidates sat for the exams at 6 168 centres across the country.

With the release of the supplementary results, the overall national performance from the 2013 matric exams is now at 80.0%, up by 2.6% from 78.2%.

Minister Motshekga said a total of 454 809 candidates have successfully attained the NSC in the class of 2013.

"We are proud of the learners who took the decision to again sit for the examinations after their set-back last year during the Grade 12 final examinations.

"Their achievement is testament to the courage, hard work and indeed perseverance," the minister said.

There has also been an increase in all categories of pass types, with 1 303 more candidates qualifying for admission to Bachelor Studies; 20 834 more candidates are now eligible for diploma studies and 10 763 more candidates qualify for admission to Higher Certificate studies.

The school was the first under the Transvaal education department to open its facilities to black students to support the St Mary’s DSG Outreach Programme. It was through that programme that I became a full-time pupil in 1996, two years after South Africa’s first democratic elections.

Only the most cynical South Africans could find no cause to celebrate the 20th anniversary of these elections. The vast majority have access to something today that they — or their parents and grandparents — could only dream of 20 years ago. For me, it is quality education; for others, it is access to clean water, electricity, or a no-fee school.

Student dies after alleged teacher belt beating.

A South African teacher is facing a possible murder charge following the death of a student he allegedly beat on the head with a belt, the education department said on Wednesday.

Sizwe Kubheka died in hospital last week after the incident left him deaf and with blood clots coming from his nose, according to South Africa's The Star. The student, aged around 16, lived in Palm Springs, south of Johannesburg.
Before the boy's death the parents had laid a charge of attempted murder with police, according to the education department.

"The alleged beating happened at school," said Gauteng province education spokeswoman Phumla Sekhonyane.
"The teacher has been arrested, we have taken him out of the school environment," she said, adding that the man was later released on bail.

"He is facing a very serious charge, in South Africa corporal punishment is completely outlawed," she said.
Both the police and education authorities have launched investigations.

The child's mother told the newspaper that her son returned home complaining of a headache on March 17.
She gave him painkillers because the family could not find transport to hospital, but his condition worsened.
"My boy was deaf just before he died. He couldn't even hear or see us when we spoke with him at his bedside," said Maria Kubheka.

"His left eye was swollen and wide open. He couldn't even blink the eye.
"The last time I saw him, hours before he died, he had blood clots coming out through his mouth and nose."
South Africa banned corporal punishment in schools in 1996, but as many as half of students still get beaten, according to the Cape Town-based Centre for Justice and Crime Prevention.
