During the event Lungelwa Kula, Deputy Director: OTT Liaison at NIPMO said: “We are grateful to THENSA for organising this event and recognising the need to create a platform where universities and industry can come together, explore potential collaborations, commercialise products and ultimately make an impact in our societies. Sector Specific Engagement Enhancing Commercialisation and Industry Involvement of Technology Transfer Office:

During the event, Zama Dlamini, Executive Management Development and Innovation at Moses Kotane Research Institute (MKRI) said: “As the Moses Kotane Research Institute, we are a provincial institute that supports intellectual property, innovation and commercialisation. While we support innovation, we also ensure that the protection of that innovation is embedded from the early stages. MKRI primarily assists innovations that can contribute to the development of KwaZulu-Natal and supports solutions that address current challenges.

“We go out and scout innovations from the idea or prototype stage, ensuring that these ideas are protected before they reach the market. We are excited that THENSA and its stakeholders are here today to raise awareness and promote support in this space. As institutions, we often work in silos and in competition with one another, which is something that should not be happening. There is a need for greater collaboration and knowledge-sharing,” she said.

THENSA, in partnership with the Moses Kotane Research Institute, Innovate Durban, Tshaya Mashabela Attorneys and other key stakeholders, recently hosted an event as part of the Sector-Specific Engagement and Technology Transfer Office (TTO) Regional Forum 'soft launch' in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).

The event formed part of the Department of Science,Technology and Innovation SA (DSTI)-funded project, “Enhancing Commercialisation and Industry Involvement of TTOs of Historically Disadvantaged Institutions and others as Identified by the National Intellectual Property Management Office (NIPMO).”

The engagement brought together industry stakeholders to explore innovations developed by universities across KZN, many of which had been identified and advanced through commercialisation workshops conducted over the past eight months. The event provided an important platform for industry representatives to engage with university-developed innovations and explore opportunities for collaboration and commercialisation.

Speaking at the event, Dr Phumuza Langa, Project Manager: Technology Transfer Projects at THENSA, said the soft launch represents the final component of the Sector-Specific Industry Engagement of the TTO Regional Forum in KZN.

“Its primary objective is to expose university-developed technologies and innovations to industry, while also creating a platform for broader discussions around innovation, commercialisation and technology transfer.

“Going forward, the aim is to establish this engagement as an annual or quarterly platform, providing TTOs with regular opportunities to engage more closely with industry, strengthen relationships, explore potential partnerships and create pathways for the commercialisation of university technologies,” he said.

THENSA recently formed part of Iyunivesithi Walter Sisulu (All Campuses) 2026/27 Walter Sisulu's EWIRA-FIRE Conference, where we also showcased our work and initiatives.
The thought-provoking event highlighted the importance of strengthening partnerships between universities, communities, industry and government, with participants emphasising the need to move beyond occasional engagement towards meaningful, sustained and impactful collaboration.

The event also featured a Gala Dinner, bringing together scholars, mostly women, and key stakeholders for an evening of networking, knowledge-sharing and engaging discussions on the important role of research and innovation in shaping Africa’s future.
