The University of Venda proudly celebrates Dr Nomalungelo Gina, an esteemed alumna whose journey embodies service, visionary leadership, and a meaningful impact. Born and raised in the rural village of Ndwedwe in KwaZulu-Natal, Dr Ginaโs journey is grounded in values service and community upliftment.
Dr Gina obtained her Masterโs degree in Public Management from the University of Venda in 2023, a qualification that strengthened her expertise in governance, ethical leadership, and public sector management. Her time at the University enhanced her capacity for evidence-based policymaking and reinforced her commitment to advancing accountable and inclusive governance within South Africaโs developmental state.
Appointed as Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation in 2024, Dr Gina plays a pivotal role in championing technological advancement, and innovation-driven development to support inclusive economic growth across South Africa. Her career spans nearly two decades in education, followed by her transition into Parliament in 2009, where she has held several strategic leadership roles. These include serving as Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition from 2019 to 2024, as well as chairing parliamentary committees in the education sector.
Her leadership journey is further marked by active contributions to organised labour and community development through the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) and the African National Congress Womenโs League (ANCWL). In recognition of her academic and professional contributions, she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Public Administration from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2025 and completed a PhD in Leadership and Management from Gideon Robert University in Zambia in the same year. Her doctoral research focused on strategic challenges in implementing ICT within local government, proposing practical frameworks to enhance service delivery, governance, and citizen engagement.
