The Universal Greening Organisation (UGO) is a non-profit organisation which was formed by students of the University of Venda under the School of Environmental Sciences. The main objective of the organisation is to interchange information with the society about environmental conservation and preservation in broad. We assist
them in resolving environmental issues that they face in their respective societies. In this manner UGO will assist communities in playing a significant role in the comprehension of Section 24 of the Constitution of RSA, which advocates for the creation of an environment that is not harmful to the health and welfare of the people of South Africa and those who lives in it. The concept of environmental awareness is the key to this organization. The organisation is operating guided by the following themes: Climate Change, Water & sanitation, Energy, Biodiversity, Food security, Waste management and Research. However, this helps people from communities to understand their role and responsibilities in mitigation of impact of these eight aspects.The world is moving towards green economy which is the reason why we must ensure sustainability in our resources for the benefits of current and future generations. The organization seeks to remain unique and recognised for its unique style and approach towards bringing environmental solutions to the country at large. The Universal greening organisation has introduced its approach of engaging undergraduate and post graduate students into work integrated learning through experience and research projects. Our second essential objective is to develop reports with real and measurable recommendations on how to address issues encountered by communities within Limpopo. This involves working with relevant stakeholders in addressing those issues, for instance: โ€œIf we identify that the community is using untested water from the river which might be contaminated, then we engage the Department of Water and Sanitation to attend to the matter with immediate effectโ€. This organisation involve traditional leaders of different communities and schools (Primary and Secondary) across the province during operation. The organisation works closely with trusted and reliable leaders on research projects which has been introduced to assist
students and communities.

โ€ขAcademic requirements โ€” ensuring fellows are prepared to contribute meaningfully.

In 2024, Koketso Gideon Mothiba stood among the very first group of fellows to participate in the pilot phase of the UGO Fellowship. For him, the Fellowship was not just a program โ€” it was a launchpad.

As Koketso defined it: โ€œThe UGO Fellowship was made to expose me, to capacitate me, and to launch me to take advantage of opportunity through God.โ€Today, his life has been transformed, opening doors to new opportunities, entrepreneurial ventures, networks, and leadership pathways.

His message to the 2026 Cohort is clear: โ€œThe platform is yours. Do not sit on it.โ€The Fellowship is about courage, solidarity, and action. It is about stepping into leadership now, shaping sustainability, and building the Africa we want.

Today we launched the UGO Fellowship 2026 Cohort, named in honour of Mme Antoinette Sithole, sister of Hector Pieterson, whose legacy reminds us of the courage and solidarity of the youth of 1976.

This Fellowship goes beyond leadership training; it is about learning from one another, building relationships, and creating solutions for the Africa we want.

As voices from the Universal Greening Organisation and the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) reminded us, fellows should not wait to tackle the Green Economy challenge. They are not seen as โ€œpotentialโ€ but as leaders to be unleashed across the continent โ€” driving sustainable development, climate action, and solidarity in the spirit of 1976.

On 20 August 2026, the UGOโ€‘UNIVEN Student Chapter proudly joined the South Africaโ€“China Youth Leaders Summit at the Green Confucius Institute, University of Venda.In dialogue with students from HBUT, we explored the dynamic role of green technology in South Africa, from solar panels and green hydrogen to sustainable agriculture and the integration of AI in farming practices. The conversations also examined the policy and institutional drivers shaping this sector, alongside research opportunities and avenues for collaborative partnerships.

Our President, Boitumelo Mashatola, together with Deputy President, Tshibalo Theodore Tshivhinda , delivered a keynote on โ€œGreen Technology Development in South Africaโ€, highlighting the importance of youth leadership in driving sustainable innovation.This summit underscored the power of crossโ€‘border collaboration in building a greener, more resilient future.
