Universal greening organization UGO

Universal greening organization UGO Environmental Protection youth-Led organization with SADC footprint. our slogan: Sharing the planet.

The Universal Greening Organisation (UGO) is a non-profit organisation which was formed by students of the University of Venda under the School of Environmental Sciences. The main objective of the organisation is to interchange information with the society about environmental conservation and preservation in broad. We assist
them in resolving environmental issues that they face in their respective

societies. In this manner UGO will assist communities in playing a significant role in the comprehension of Section 24 of the Constitution of RSA, which advocates for the creation of an environment that is not harmful to the health and welfare of the people of South Africa and those who lives in it. The concept of environmental awareness is the key to this organization. The organisation is operating guided by the following themes: Climate Change, Water & sanitation, Energy, Biodiversity, Food security, Waste management and Research. However, this helps people from communities to understand their role and responsibilities in mitigation of impact of these eight aspects.The world is moving towards green economy which is the reason why we must ensure sustainability in our resources for the benefits of current and future generations. The organization seeks to remain unique and recognised for its unique style and approach towards bringing environmental solutions to the country at large. The Universal greening organisation has introduced its approach of engaging undergraduate and post graduate students into work integrated learning through experience and research projects. Our second essential objective is to develop reports with real and measurable recommendations on how to address issues encountered by communities within Limpopo. This involves working with relevant stakeholders in addressing those issues, for instance: โ€œIf we identify that the community is using untested water from the river which might be contaminated, then we engage the Department of Water and Sanitation to attend to the matter with immediate effectโ€. This organisation involve traditional leaders of different communities and schools (Primary and Secondary) across the province during operation. The organisation works closely with trusted and reliable leaders on research projects which has been introduced to assist
students and communities.

As we await the outcome of the UGO Fellowship 2026 Cohort selection, we pause to revisit a powerful moment from the journey of one of our 2025 Fellows, Nyiko Ngobeni .During her travels in Kenya en route to Sierra Leone, Ngobeni shared her brilliant reflections alongside our very own UGO Fellow Custodian, Vutlari Dhliwayo.

Their conversation captured the essence of what the Fellowship stands for: exposure, leadership, and the courage to step beyond borders in pursuit of Africaโ€™s Green Economy transformation.

These stories remind us that the Fellowship is more than a program โ€” it is a movement of young Africans shaping a sustainable future, one journey at a time.

Today, we celebrate the spirit of unity, resilience, and collaboration that defines our continent. Africa Day reminds us that even in moments of difficulty and uncertainty, our shared future depends on how we choose to lead, engage, and build together.

At the Universal Greening Organisation (UGO), we believe that sustainable progress begins with collective action nurturing our environment, empowering communities, and shaping a greener, more inclusive Africa.

Letโ€™s continue sharing the planet and strengthening the bonds that make Africa thrive.

When youthโ€™s bright flame is kindled from within,
Exposure grants the spark to rise and grow;
Through industryโ€™s wise hand, new paths begin,
And intercontinental bonds shall show.

In halls of leadership, their voice takes flight,
Protected by environments just and fair;
The green economy shines with futureโ€™s light,
A vision fellows boldly choose to bear.

To all who dared to dream and thus applied,
Your courage marks the dawn of brighter days;
Soon shall the chosen stand with noble pride,
And walk the fellowshipโ€™s inspiring ways.

Await we now the someone's yet to meet,
Whose steps shall make this fellowship complete.

One of the most inspiring highlights of the UGO Fellowship 2025 Cohort was seeing our Botswana female Fellows standing proudly alongside our very own UGO Family, Zonke Mchunu.

This moment was more than just a photo opportunity. It was a celebration of crossโ€‘border collaboration, shared vision, and the power of young African women leading with courage and purpose.

Their presence reminds us that the fellowship is not only about skills and exposure, but also about building bonds that transcend geography. It is about creating a network of leaders who uplift one another and carry forward the mission of sustainability, innovation, and unity across the continent.

Together, they embody the spirit of UGO: women who rise, inspire, and redefine leadership for Africaโ€™s future.

The UGO Fellowship 2025 Cohort had the honour of visiting the Thabo Mbeki Foundation, where our Fellows, Custodians, and Partners shared a moment of history with His Excellency, President Thabo Mbeki, the second President of the Republic of South Africa (1999โ€“2008)

Together, we captured memories in photographs and received thoughtful intellectual gifts that symbolised wisdom, leadership, and vision.

As an organisation, we also planted a tree, a powerful act aligned with our mission to promote the Green Economy and advance environmental sustainability. This was not just a gesture, but a commitment to nurturing growth, resilience, and a greener future for Africa.

This visit reminded us that leadership is about more than influence. It is about legacy. It is about planting seeds of ideas, hope, and sustainability that will flourish long after us.

For our Fellows, meeting President Mbeki was more than an encounter with a former Head of State. It was a call to embrace responsibility, to lead ethically, and to carry forward the vision of a continent thriving in unity and sustainability.

Shipakule Shilaveko Cleaven (University of Venda, South Africa) captured the essence of the UGO Fellowship 2025 Cohort when he noted:
โ€œThis fellowship didnโ€™t just equip me with skills โ€” it built my confidence, gave me a voice, and showed me that I truly belong. Being in another country opened my eyes to new cultures, perspectives, and possibilities, reminding me that my impact can go far beyond where I come from.โ€

As we await the selection of the UGO Fellowship 2026 Cohort, His words remind us that the fellowship is more than an opportunity it is a journey of belonging, exposure, and transformation. His reflection echoes the spirit of UGO: empowering young leaders to see beyond borders and embrace their global impact.

Over the past month, we witnessed something extraordinary: thousands of young Africans across 11 AU Member States stepped forward with courage, ambition, and hope to apply for the UGO Fellowship 2026 Cohort.

This milestone is more than numbers, itโ€™s a testament to trust in a vision that seeks to flood Africaโ€™s Green Economy with ethical, skilled, and visionary leaders.

Now the journey deepens: selections, interviews, and soon the announcement of the 200 Fellows who will embark on a transformational 90โ€‘day journey beginning 1 July 2026. For many, it will mean their first passport, first flight, and first step into a world of new possibilities.

This is bigger than a fellowship.
It is access. exposure. belonging. leadership. hope.

To all who applied, thank you.
To partners walking this path with us, we remain open to meaningful collaboration.

Just over a month ago, we launched what many believed was impossible; a call for applications for the UGO Fellowship 2026 Cohort across 11 AU Member States, targeting university-going youth pursuing careers linked to the Green Economy.

Today, we close that call. And what a milestone it has been.

Behind every application is a story of hope, ambition, and courage. Behind this process was the enormous task of reaching young people across borders, communities, and institutions, at a time when many have become cautious of opportunities because of the growing wave of online scams disguised as impact programs. Yet despite that reality, thousands of young Africans trusted the vision. That alone is deeply humbling.

The Universal greening organization UGO is not just building a program. We are building a continental movement determined to flood Africaโ€™s Green Economy with ethical, skilled, and visionary young leaders who will shape the future of our continent.

Now the journey deepens.

Next comes selections, interviews, and then the defining moment; 25 June 2025, when we officially announce the 200 UGO Fellows for the Class of 2026.

On 1 July, the real work begins: a transformational 90-day journey that will end with an exchange program that, for many of these young people, will mean their first passport, first flight, and first time leaving the country of their birth.

To some, that may seem ordinary.
To these youth, it will be life-changing.

This is bigger than a fellowship.
It is access. Exposure. Belonging. Leadership. Hope.

And for us, this moment feels like the beginning of something Africa will remember for a very long time.

To those who feel connected to this vision and the kind of impact they want to be associated with, our doors remain open for meaningful partnerships.

Thank You.
