🍊 Fruit bats, birds, and monkeys in South African litchi orchards: the real story
Our study by Vusani Mphethe (PhD, Univen), Sina M. Weier, Lourens H. Swanepoel, Daniel Parker & Peter J. Taylor combined field experiments and farmer surveys to compare actual and perceived crop damage:
📊 Key results:
Fruit bats caused very low crop damage.
Control trees (accessible to wildlife) produced higher yields than caged trees, showing wildlife benefits.
Birds and insect-eating bats provided significant pest control, outweighing minor losses from fruit bats and monkeys.
Weather and monkeys were the main contributors to fruit loss.
Farmers often overestimated damage from vertebrates, especially on commercial farms.
✅ Takeaway: Protecting fruit bats and birds maximizes yields and ecosystem benefits, while education can reduce unnecessary persecution.
