🎉 A New Chapter for Engineering Education Begins! 🎉

The Faculty of Engineering, in collaboration with Ferdinand Postma High School, is proud to celebrate the opening of the new Xcel Campus on the Ferdinand Postma school grounds.

The Xcel Programme offers a valuable second chance to talented students who aspire to study engineering but did not initially meet the admission requirements. Through intensive Mathematics and Physical Science tuition, combined with practical subjects such as Computer Aided Design, Programming, Project Management and Academic Literacy, students are equipped with the skills, confidence and foundation needed to succeed in engineering studies.

The new facilities will enable the programme to accommodate more students than ever before, expanding opportunities for future engineers and helping them turn their dreams into reality.

By investing in potential and providing a pathway to success, the Xcel Programme continues to transform lives, one student at a time. We look forward to witnessing the achievements of the next generation of engineers as they begin their journey on this exciting new campus.

🔙 Flashback Friday | Hands on learning in action

With the first week of exams now completed, let’s take a look back at some of the practical learning experiences that took place within the NWU Faculty of Engineering this semester.

Final year Industrial Engineering students took on a practical Facilities Design challenge as part of the INGB417 module.

Preparing to make 10 sets is one thing, but producing 2 000 per day is quite another. And when the challenge becomes producing 40 000 per day as a group, everything has to be rethought.

From building functional assembly stations for boxed tangram sets with logical flow, effective space utilisation, storage and efficiency, students experienced firsthand the interaction between production process design and facility design.

Practical experiences like these sharpen problem solving, boost engineering insight and prepare students for the complex systems and projects that lie ahead.

At the NWU Faculty of Engineering, learning goes beyond the classroom.

Factory floor final-year vibes! 🏭

On 19 May 2026, our final-year Industrial Engineering class went on an exciting site visit to the BIC manufacturing facility and Ithemba Outsourcing!

Instead of just reading textbooks, students got to see Facilities Design in action. They watched how production processes shape a factory floor, how capacity planning keeps up with demand, and how smart layouts create a smooth workflow.

It was also eye-opening to see how real-world management policies drive big strategic decisions on the floor.

Huge thanks to BIC and Ithemba Outsourcing for an incredible day of learning!

As exam season begins, the NWU Faculty of Engineering wishes all our students the very best.

Remember that every late night, challenge and problem solved has been part of your journey toward becoming the engineer you aspire to be.

Stay focused, trust your preparation and give it your best.

“The greater the difficulty, the more glory in surmounting it.” Isambard Kingdom Brunel

And remember, coffee may not solve every engineering problem, but it certainly helps with the calculations.

Good luck with the exams. We are proud to be part of your journey.
