MULUNGUSHI UNIVERSITY AND KIT MARK AFRICA ENGINEERING WEEK WITH A CELEBRATORY MARCH

As part of the commemoration of the 12th UNESCO Africa Engineering Week, engineering students from Mulungushi University and the Kitwe Institute of Technology (KIT) came together for a celebratory march through Kabwe.

The procession commenced at Kabwe Central Hospital, with a brass band leading students from both institutions towards the KIT campus. The march was a vibrant display of unity, pride and solidarity for the engineering profession.

Upon arrival at KIT, students gathered at the KIT Assembly Hall for a career talk, where they had the opportunity to gain insights, share experiences and engage on matters relating to their academic and professional development.

The day concluded with a networking session, giving students from both institutions an opportunity to interact, build connections and strengthen relationships within the engineering community.

The celebration highlighted that engineering goes beyond the classroom—it is about learning, collaboration, innovation, leadership and building connections that shape Africa’s future.

The EIZ Mulungushi University Student Chapter appreciates all students, organisers, the brass band, speakers and everyone who contributed to making the celebration a success.

One Profession. One Community. One Engineering Future.

MEET THE ENGINEER #1

1.SITAMBANI DAVY

2. ENGINEERING DISCIPLINE-
Civil Engineering

3. YEAR OF STUDY--
Third Year

4. WHY DID I CHOOSE ENGINEERING?
I chose engineering because I believe it is a field that can equip me with more than technical knowledge. It develops problem-solving, leadership, resilience, critical thinking and the ability to work under pressure. I believe these are skills that can help me achieve many things, both within engineering and beyond it. My journey so far has already started teaching me many of these lessons.

5. WHAT DOES ENGINEERING MEAN TO ME?
To me, engineering is the awareness of what we are capable of transforming. It teaches me to look at problems differently—to understand them, think critically and find ways to create solutions. And those problems are not necessarily limited to engineering. The engineering way of thinking can be applied to many challenges in life and society. Engineering, to me, is therefore not just what we study; it is a mindset and a capability to create change.

6. MY MESSAGE TO ASPIRING ENGINEERS
The moment you step into engineering, you have started a journey. It does not matter what year you are in or how difficult the journey becomes. Take what you learn beyond the classroom. The knowledge, resilience, discipline and ability to handle pressure that you develop as an engineer can be applied to whatever you do in life—even outside engineering.

As aspiring engineers, we should strive to become people our societies can trust and rely on. We should use the minds and skills we are developing to solve problems, create opportunities and bring meaningful change. Engineering is a blessing, but the responsibility is on us to recognize that blessing and start utilizing it.

ENGINEERING THE FUTURE!!!
I began my academic journey with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Mulungushi University in Zambia. My interest in intelligent machines and automation later led me to pursue a Master’s degree in Control Systems and Robotics in Poland, where I deepened my understanding of autonomous systems and advanced control methods. I am currently pursuing a PhD in Electronics Engineering with a focus on Robotics in South Africa, where my research focuses on developing intelligent robotic systems for complex environments.
My passion gradually grew around Control Systems, Robotics, and Artificial Intelligence. These fields focus on designing systems that can sense their environment, make decisions, and act intelligently. Today, industries around the world are shifting toward automation and intelligent machines, and engineers who understand how to design such systems will shape the future of technology.

Through research and practical work, I now focus on developing robotic systems that can perform inspections in dangerous environments or unstructured environments such as underground mines and Agriculture environments. These robots use technologies such as LiDAR sensors, depth cameras, and AI algorithms to analyze environments, detect structural risks such as fractures or unstable rock formations, and help improve safety for workers. Control systems ensure that these robots can move autonomously, maintain stability, and make accurate decisions in complex environments.

Working on robotics and AI has taught me that engineering today is interdisciplinary. A single project may require knowledge in Control Systems, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Computer Vision, Electronics and Embedded Systems, and Mechanical Design and Robotics. My journey has also given me opportunities to collaborate with international research communities such as INESC TEC in Portugal, where I have contributed to research in agricultural robotics, further demonstrating how engineering skills can connect students from Zambia to global innovation networks.

For students choosing projects or still figuring out their career path, my advice is choose projects that solve real problems and challenge you to learn new technologies. Fields such as robotics, AI, and automation are transforming industries worldwide, and students who explore these areas early can open doors to research, innovation, and entrepreneurship. It is normal not to have everything figured out at the beginning but what matters is staying curious, building practical skills, and being consistent in learning. Engineering is a journey of growth, and with discipline and determination, your ideas today can become the technologies that shape tomorrow.
