Moving Beyond GDP Rethinking Economic Progress in Zambia

This past weekend, our Secretary General, Hope Sibeso, had the honor of representing UNZARES at the Rethinking Economics Zambia National Gathering in Kabwe.

During the sessions, delegates from across the country engaged in critical discussions on why Gross Domestic Product (GDP) alone is not a sufficient measure of a nation's progress. While GDP measures economic output, it fails to account for income inequality, environmental sustainability, and the overall well-being of citizens.

For Zambia, moving 'Beyond GDP' means advocating for intentional redistributive policies, investing in human development (like education and healthcare), and ensuring that the wealth generated from our natural resources actually improves the lives of all Zambians, especially those in rural areas.

UNZARES is committed to bringing these national conversations back to our campus and leading the charge for a more inclusive and sustainable economic future.

BEYOND GDP STUDENTS CONFERENCE | Pamodzi Hotel, Lusaka | 9th June 2026

PART TWO ✍🏿

A session on the UN framework took us through progress across Nature, Peace, Income and Wealth, Education, Wellbeing, and Sustainability, alongside the Gross National Happiness Index and Human Development Index. Within that work, the High-Level Expert Group (HLEG) has formally acknowledged these gaps in GDP at the policy level, which matters, because how something is measured shapes how it gets governed.📌📈

And the student roundtable discussions made one thing obvious: this isn't only a policy conversation, it's a career frontier. Data scientists, environmental economists, social policy analysts, and development practitioners all have work to do here, and a lot of that work falls to our generation.🔗📝

One main takeaway UNZARES is taking from this conference, it's that alternatives to GDP aren't trying to replace it, they're trying to complete it. And completing it isn't something any one institution can do alone. Governments have to legislate for it. Civil society has to push for it. The private sector has to invest in it. Academia has to prepare students for it. Political will on its own won't get us there, it takes every one of these actors moving as partners, not in parallel. 📊✍🏿
