⚪️🔵 The Research and Education Secretary, Tafadzwa Katsande, gave a brief history of the Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) at the recently concluded Gender Summit held in Midlands.

He described how social contradictions, within the education sector in Zimbabwe, specifically, led to organised student resistance.

Students must understand these social contradictions, and take the necessary action to address them.

🔵⚪⚓️ The ZINASU anchored SRC continues to do exceptional work at the University of Zimbabwe.

The SRC implemented a robust 3-day breast cancer awareness programme aimed at raising awareness among the student body on the importance of early detection and standing in solidarity with survivors. The Union remains a blast furnace of leadership. More work and organizing continues across the country.

⚪️🔵 :

Students gathered at the Mashonaland Gender Summit to speak frankly about the realities they face within their institutions.

FINANCIAL INSTABILITY.

This is what dominated the conversation.

When students cannot afford tuition, food, or accommodation, they become vulnerable to exploitation. Young women in particular are pushed into transactional relationships, including s*x for grades or tuition money.

This is FUNDAMENTALLY a structural failure that demands action from institutions of higher learning, policymakers, and all of us who care about safe, equitable access to education.

🔵⚪️TIME TO ORGANISE!

The President, and Commander in Chief of ZINASU, Liberty Hamauswa charged students from Mashonaland to radically organise and educate students and young people from a gender-conscious lens.

According to the CiC, fighting for student rights, also means fighting for gender justice.

Our deployee in the University of Zimbabwe SRC, Vice President Cde Nobuhle, has been on the ground demonstrating organic leadership. She recently took part in a student engagement focused on addressing Gender Based Violence, Sexual Harassment, Exploitation and Abuse. The Union remains dedicated and committed to deploying organic and principled leadership that is ready to deliver.

The Union joined Trust Africa in celebrating 20 years of impact. The commemorations ran under the theme: Sustaining African Agency – Shaping the Future We Want.

The event was a powerful testament to the strides that can be made where there is vision and commitment. As ZINASU, we believe in the critical role of students in shaping the future we want by championing innovative ideas which seek to address the problems of today and participating meaningfully in decision-making processes.

⚪️💙Mashonaland Gender Summit | Breakaway Sessions

Led by the VP and Gender Secretary students are now in groups conversing, sharing experiences and co-creating solutions. The Gender Summits are a platform for grounded political education, honest dialogue and collective organizing. From the ongoing conversations we will commit to developing practical recommendations and action plans to fight for student dignity and push for safer learning environments.

The Gender Summit is currently underway with students from Mashonaland Province. This year's Gender Summit is running under the theme: Student Dignity & the Struggle Against Gender Exploitation on Campus. This is meant to advance a clear argument that meaningful education requires more than access to lecture rooms. Students must be able to learn in conditions that protect their dignity, safety, equality and basic needs including food, accommodation and healthcare.

Education cannot therefore be genuinely emancipatory where students are humiliated, exploited or denied the conditions needed to learn and participate with dignity.
