Zimbabwe Open University

Zimbabwe Open University Learn while you Earn!!! It started off as an offshoot of the University of Zimbabwe and has since grown into a fully fledged University.

The Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU) is a unique institution of higher learning offering Open and Distance e-Learning to students in Zimbabwe, in the region and in the international arena. A Centre for Distance Education was established in 1993 by the University of Zimbabwe, in the Department of Educational Administration. This was in line with the Government's realisation, after independence, that

the majority of the people in Zimbabwe was hungry for tertiary education and had missed the opportunity of going to college when they were still young, due to the colonial restrictions that had denied them the chance. The ZANU-PF Government, whose 1980 Election Manifesto made education a human right, facilitated the development of distance learning to accommodate those people who would not have been in a position to go to conventional, residential tertiary institutions for an education because of lack of sufficient funding and other commitments, for example, work commitments. In 1996, the Centre became the University College of Distance Education headed by Professor Graham Hill. Three years later, on 1st March 1999, through an Act of Parliament, the University College became the first open and distance learning University in Zimbabwe. The first Vice Chancellor for the University was Professor Peter Dzvimbo. Dr Kurasha took over as the head of the Zimbabwe Open University in 2003 and she made history by becoming the first female Vice Chancellor in Zimbabwe. The Zimbabwe Open University is a multi-disciplinary and inter-faculty institution of higher learning offering Open and Distance Learning (ODL) programmes. ZOU offers degree and non-degree programmes through distance teaching and open e-learning to youth and adult learners. With a combination of cutting edge technology, print materials and face-to face tuition, the Zimbabwe Open University provides knowledge, competencies and dispositions necessary for the development of competitive human capital. In a dynamic and fast changing global village, a philosophy of lifelong learning for social inclusion is our guiding beacon!

The results are in! Margaret Chakurira, our Student Innovator from Mashonaland West, has secured a stellar 7th place out of 18 elite young minds at the ZITF Innovators Forum!

✨Her "Ivhumunhu" innovation proved that ZOU research isn't just academic—it’s industry-disrupting.

While Margaret was making waves in Hall 5, Sithembinkosi Damba (Bulawayo Campus) was turning Hall 3 into a marketplace with her Dorofiya Juice and Baobab Fruit Cakes. 🍹🍰

We don't just teach innovation; we incubate it. Our ODFL model gives visionaries the "safety net" to build businesses and win national competitions without missing a lecture.

✨ Beyond the Ballot: New SRC Leaders Dive into "Real Work" at Stephen Magolis Induction

The posters are coming down, the rallies have gone quiet, and the ink on the ballots has dried. But for our newly elected Student Representative Council (SRC), the real journey didn't end at the polls, it began this week at the Stephen Magolis Induction.

From April 9th to 12th, your leaders stepped away from the "noise" to step into their purpose. It’s been a week of reflection, growth, and a heavy realization: being elected is just the door; serving you is the work.

🌱 Building a Legacy, Not Just a Title
Friday was the soul of the retreat. While the rest of the campus moved at its usual pace, your SRC was diving deep into what it truly means to lead with heart. Led by the inspiring Ms. Odiline Kava (Vakoma), the day was less about "politics" and more about promise.

• Finding the "Why": Every leader sat down to define their personal vision. They aren’t just names on a list; they are students, just like you, aligning their dreams with ZOU’s mission to empower the world.
• The Power of Your Voice: The sessions focused on Effective Communication. It’s not about shouting the loudest; it’s about listening the hardest to the concerns you whisper in the hallways and lecture rooms.
• Stronger Together: The day ended under the open sky with team-building. Because to lead a student body as diverse as ours, they first had to learn how to lean on one another.

🏛️ A High Bar, A Higher Commitment
The Pro-Vice Chancellor put it simply: "The University is watching. The students are depending on you."

Our leaders are being forged into "Custodians of Commitment." They are learning that ethical leadership isn't a buzzword, it’s a promise to be client-driven, innovative, and, above all, accountable to you.

"The standard is high, and the journey starts here."
To our new SRC: Lead with boldness. To the students of ZOU: Your future is in dedicated hands. As they wrap up their training on academic integrity and financial stewardship this weekend, let’s get ready to fly higher.

The Torch is Passed: A New Era of Service Begins 🇿🇼🎓
https://www.zou.ac.zw/empowering-the-student-voice-a-new-era-of-service-begins-for-the-2026-national-src/

On the 9th of April 2026 in the quiet of the boardroom but with the weight of thousands of dreams, your 2026 National Student Representative Council (NSRC) officially took their oath. This isn’t just a change in leadership, it is a promise to every working professional, every parent studying late into the night, and every student in the furthest corners of our nation.

"We haven't just held titles; we have carried a mission." With those moving words, outgoing President Ms. Joyline Madombwe bid an emotional farewell, reminding us all that the heartbeat of student leadership is Zvido zvevadzidzi, the will and welfare of the students, first and always.

As incoming President Mr. Alpha Zigara took the mantle, his message was clear: No voice unheard, no student left behind. Inspired by the legacy of Mandela, your new council is committed to transparency, servant leadership, and a digital mindset that meets you wherever you are.

To our new leaders: Lead with humility. To our students: Your voice has never been stronger.
Together, we continue our journey of Empowerment Through Open Learning.
