WHERE PRACTISE MEETS PURPOSE.

On 28 October 2026, CUZ was honoured to host Mr Musekiwa Makwanya, President of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), for a special lecture with our HSW and Diploma in Social Work 2.2 students, who begin field attachment in 2027.

Drawing on his years of practice and leadership, Mr Makwanya reflected on the profession's realities, lessons learnt, and the areas of focus that equip social workers to serve with competence, ethics, and integrity in Zimbabwe and beyond.
The session deepened our students' learning in Casework, Groupwork, Basic and Advanced Counselling in Social Work, and Social Work in Communities, linking classroom theory to real-world practice.

Thank you, Mr Makwanya, for walking alongside the next generation of change agents as they prepare to work with individuals, groups, and communities.

Empowering Tomorrow's Tech Leaders

Industrial attachment is more than just a course requirement; it's a launchpad for professional growth. To ensure our IT students excel, Mr. Pasi, our IT lecturer, conducted a comprehensive orientation session covering professional conduct, industry expectations, workplace ethics, and career guidance.

Investing time in preparing our students before they enter the industry ensures they step into the workplace confident, well-prepared, and ready to represent the Catholic University of Zimbabwe with excellence.

CUZ STUDENTS EMPOWERED TO PROMOTE MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS

Students from the Catholic University of Zimbabwe (CUZ), led by Mr Madongorere, participated in a five-day Friendship Bench in a Box training workshop at Women’s University in Africa (WUA), alongside students from Morgen Zintech College and WUA.

The workshop equipped participants with essential knowledge and skills in talk therapy, counselling and peer support. Attendees received Friendship Bench training Levels 1–3, preparing them to serve as “buddies” and help bridge the gap in mental health support within their respective communities.

The training also brought together key stakeholders, including the Tertiary Education Council, represented by Mrs Mawarire, and the Mental Health Department, represented by Mr Chikobvu.

“There is no health without mental health.”

Through empathy, active listening and meaningful connection, these students are preparing to make a positive difference in the lives of others. Following their assessments, the participants are expected to graduate and continue their journey as trained buddies.

At the Catholic University of Zimbabwe, we believe that building healthier communities begins with compassion, understanding and a willingness to listen.

Together, let us make mental health support more accessible to all.

CUZ is proud to host Franziska Sawitzki and Jennifer Jung from Katho, Germany, as part of an exchange program with our social work Department. From 7th to 9th October, they led a 3-day seminar for social work students on s*xuality and s*x education. They explored the beliefs, norms and stereotypes that influence how s*xuality is discussed and considered the role s*x education can play in higher learning institutions.

To Katho University, thank you for your generosity and partnership. We are grateful for this exchange and look forward to many more

Pink October: Look After Yourself and Look Out for Each Other

From the Catholic University of Zimbabwe, we have a message for everyone: wherever you are, you matter and so does your health.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and we don't want it to be just another pink ribbon on a poster. We want it to be a month where families, churches, workplaces, schools and neighbourhoods talk openly, check on one another and let go of the silence that keeps too many people from getting help. Almost all of us know someone who has walked this road: a mother, an aunt, a friend, a colleague. Many will tell you the same thing: the sooner they knew, the more hope they had.
Get to know your body. Take a few minutes each month to notice what's normal for you. If you find a lump, a change in shape, or anything that feels different, don't panic or ignore it
Visit a clinic. Most changes turn out to be nothing serious but only a health worker can tell you that. Peace of mind is worth the trip.

Talk about it. Tell your sister, your friend, your mother. Men, this is for you too because breast cancer can affect you as well.

To anyone fighting this illness right now: we see you, we are proud of you and you are not alone. To those who have lost someone: you are in our prayers.

As a Catholic university, we believe every life is a gift worth protecting. Caring for your health honours that gift and caring for each other is how we put our faith into action.
