Your business can only grow to the level of your thinking and reasoning ability. I know you’re now comparing the level of your business and your decision making and reasoning ability. Yes, it’s true. The sharper and smarter you are, the more likely that your business will outshine others in the marketplace.

Continuously dig deeper and improve your knowledge horizon. Don’t keep on clinging to that which is old. It doesn’t have any place in the current settings. PHYSICALLY COUNT THEM OR ELSE…

Janet opened her big grocery shop in Chitungwiza from her farewell package. As someone who was a bit informed bought four POS (Point of Sale) machines to make the invoicing easy as she anticipated high traffic on her busy shop location.

The location proved busy and her daily sales were so encouraging. She had a total of 10 employees at her grocery wholesale outlet, four till operators, a store supervisor and some shop floor workers.

For the first five months the shop registered visible growth stock wise to an extend of hiring a nearby warehouse for stocking. The warehouse at some point got stocked to the brim and she couldn’t imagine herself winding up or getting out of business until the store supervisor and the warehouse guy teamed up on some evil act of siphoning stocks out of the warehouse for their own benefit. Janet operated the shop and even the warehouse without doing any stocktake and the two capitalised on the loophole or operational deficiency.

Her stocks eventually dried up as the team was taking more than Janet was replacing. The entire business lasted only two years and Janet found herself out of business.

Management of business is more than checking on the daily cash analysis, ordering right for the market and a good location. You must put in place enough INTERNAL CONTROLS to safeguard your valuable hard earned investment. Janet’s 20 year toil was wiped out due to some deficiencies (lack of deterrent internal controls).

You need to continuously count them to check whether the theoretical stock is tallying with the actual otherwise you’ll be shocked one day.

Employing relatives is never a substitute for internal controls

Even if you have your wife, brother, sister or son on key positions within the organisation, that should never be a substitute for effective internal controls. These are mere human beings capable of conniving and being convinced otherwise. What maintains and locks in your value are strong and effective internal controls.

Controls assist on the accuracy and completeness of your transactions, systems and records. I have seen some people who take what they get from their cash box as the sales figure, that’s far from the truth and is also a good and sure recipe for winding up operations.

Actual sales are determined by computing the products actually sold and their selling prices, that gives you the sales figure that you must then compare with what’s in that card board box. Point of sale systems have simplified this process and these computations are just done automatically and you run the sales report.

The story doesn’t end there. Who at your organisation verifies what’s on the receipt against what the customer finally gets? That’s another area where most people lose value on. You know when we talk of internal controls, we’re talking about the entire organisation in terms of how every activity is done.

We can also move on to your procurement process until the goods are received in your shop. How accurate is that whole process. Are you not capturing empty invoices without the corresponding merchandise? You boast about a non existent stock holding figure if you’re not careful.

In any business setup, communication sets the ball rolling. Noting happens unless it’s communicated effectively. The level and intensity of your communication skills within and without sets you apart. Communication skills can be learnt and be mastered.

You can’t effectively close a deal without cutting edge negotiation skills. How you say it out determines whether you get it or not. You might have a good product or service but if you can’t entice and convince the customer you’ll lose it.

_What is Inventory Turnover?_

Inventory turnover, or the inventory turnover ratio, is the number of times a business sells and replaces its stock of goods during a given period. It considers the cost of goods sold, relative to its average inventory for a year or in any a set period of time.

A high inventory turnover generally means that goods are sold faster and a low turnover rate indicates weak sales and excess inventories, which may be challenging for a business.

Inventory turnover can be compared to historical turnover ratios, planned ratios, and industry averages to assess competitiveness and intra-industry performance. Inventory turns can vary significantly by industry.

Success in business is partly determined by the number of times you turn the stocks that you have within a month. It doesn’t make any business sense to have a stock value of US$200,000 per month when your monthly sales are only US$20,000. This means you’re carrying 10 months worth of stocks. You would rather invest elsewhere that tying your money 💰 in inventory that you cannot push within reasonable time.
