Productivity is never an accident, it is always the result of commitment to excellence, intelligent planning and focused effort. It’s the story of Lupane State University students who recently launched Geographic Information Systems Society which has set sights in improving the geographic information systems in Lupane and nearby areas.
The event that was graced by Madodana Sithole from the department of Geography and Geo Information Science, members of Lupane Local Board and Bukhosi Khumalo (ALUMNI student).
During the event one of the senior students Ngqondibanzi Ndlovu said GIS is important as it will ease the pressure of going to remote areas for research purposes.
“A map serves as a paper to liaise with incase of any research instead of going to the field for data collection in most rural areas,” he said.
Members of cooperate society endorsed the project and admitted that the students project will play a pivotal role in solving some of their problems they are facing as local authorities. They further promised that they will take the news to their bosses and see how best they can work with the GIS Society.
Mr Sithole who is also their supervisor added that the society should plan well their activities so that it can act as a career guidance to others students.
“I think it is important to plan the activities well such that the club creates a day for career guidance to the lower parts, telling them on the orginisation`s expectations when on internship. Generally the internship requirements from students,” said Sithole.
The society is looking forward to recruiting more students and in cooperate some orginisations like Lupane Local Board, ZESA, Bulawayo City Counsil, Mbembesi Catchment area and any other orginisation that may be interested.
Members of the society also expressed that they are looking forward to making their project commercial as the time goes on, so hard work and passion will make the society reach greater heights.
