🏏 Building a strong student community goes beyond the classroom.

Students and staff from UTAS Ultimo recently joined the VU Sydney community for a friendly cricket day at Brassington Field.

It was a great opportunity for students to step away from their studies, connect with others and enjoy some friendly competition together.

Experiences like this are an important part of student life – creating opportunities to build friendships, make memories and feel part of the VU Sydney community.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and made it such a memorable day!

Another block completed - and that calls for a celebration! 🎉

What better way to welcome Sydney’s warmer days than with sunshine, good music, great company and a table full of treats? ☀️🍓🎶

To mark the halfway point of Semester 2, our VU Sydney community came together for Block Fest, enjoying fresh fruit, sweet treats, savoury bites, refreshing drinks and plenty of reasons to dance. 💃✨

Here’s to the progress made so far, summer on the horizon and making every block a little more memorable!

VU Vultures for the gold! 🥇🦅

Our team of 60 student-athletes took on the best university talent from across Australia at UniSport Australia Nationals in Perth, with the Mixed AFL 9s team going undefeated all week before claiming VU's first-ever AFL 9s championship title. 🏆

There was plenty more to celebrate too:
🏐 A Mixed Netball team that fell just one point short of the grand final after reaching the semi-finals
🏌️ Strong performances across golf, basketball and netball
🩵 Opening ceremony flag bearers Te Rina Whatham and Ben Davies proudly carrying the VU flag

UniSport Nationals once again proved why it's one of the biggest events on the university sport calendar.

For Team Captain Te Rina Whatham:
“Nationals is so much more than what happens on the court and field, it’s the connections, memories and sense of belonging that make it truly special.”

💬 “It’s so important for our Q***r community to see us welcomed as our authentic selves in education, in sports, and by the general public. We felt so much love and support from Victoria University, Western Bulldogs, and by the lovely attendees at the match.” 🌈🏳️‍🌈

That was VU student and Q***r Collective President Elijah Hartshorne after tossing the coin at the Western Bulldogs AFLW Pride Round at Whitten Oval.

A crowd of 4,327 filled Whitten Oval for the Western Bulldogs vs Essendon match, making it the ground’s biggest crowd in 5 years.

There were pronoun badges, rainbow hair extensions by VU alum Loz Main’s The Rumours are True salon, face painting and performances bringing plenty of colour off the field. On it, the Bulldogs delivered a 43-point win. 🐶

VU student and Bulldogs player Analea McKee summed up what Pride means to her:
💬 “Everyone being included. No matter how you identify, you’re welcome in this space.”

As match-day sponsor for the fourth year running, VU is proud to stand alongside the Western Bulldogs and celebrate the LGBTQIA+ players, supporters, advocates and allies who continue to shape women’s football.❤️🧡💛💚🩵💜

What do the Western Bulldogs, VU students and future careers in Melbourne's west have in common? 🐶🩵 A lot more than you might think.

Operating from Whitten Oval in Footscray, the Western Bulldogs Community Foundation works with communities across Melbourne's west on programs focused on leadership, mental health, education and inclusion.🏉✨

For newly arrived migrants involved in the Foundation's Team Up program, sport can be a gateway to community life. As General Manager Hannah Singleton puts it, participants "might not know anything about footy, but they trust the environment." 🌏🤝

Through a long-standing partnership between VU and the Western Bulldogs Community Foundation, young people across Melbourne's west are exploring future pathways, building skills and connecting with opportunities they may not have considered before.

In 2025, more than 70 VU students completed placements with the Foundation, supporting workshops, mentoring programs and community initiatives across Melbourne's west.🎓

Many grew up in the same communities as the young people they're now working alongside.

💬 "When participants see someone just a few years older who shares their background, that is just a game changer," says Hannah. "They start to think: I could be like them."

Alongside those placements, more than 860 secondary students participated in programs focused on leadership, mental health, intercultural understanding and employment readiness.💡

The Foundation has even found a way to start conversations that aren't always easy to have.

💬 "How do you talk to a group of older men about healthy masculinity?” she asks. “We’ve been doing that for years – and we can, because we’ve created a safe space through the club."

This story is featured in the , highlighting the people, partnerships and projects creating meaningful change across Melbourne's west and beyond.

The VU 110 Gala was one of those nights where every face in the room seemed to hold a piece of our story.🩵

More than 550 students, staff, alumni, partners and companions of the university came together at Melbourne Town Hall to celebrate 110 years of creating opportunities through education, from our beginnings as Footscray Technical College to the VU we know today. 🏫✨

It was so good to see everyone in one room: graduates returning with stories to tell, students sharing where their VU journeys are taking them, and around the room, people who’ve spent years making education, research and community life better for others.

The night’s theme was Moving with Purpose, told through three chapters: Purpose, People and Possibility. Six remarkable members of the VU community whose work has left a lasting mark on VU and communities were recognised for doing exactly that:

🌟𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗟𝗲𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀
🔹 Karen Jackson, Protecting Country
🔹 Professor Gary Foley, Research with Impact
🔹 Professor Tony Walker ASM, Partnering with Principle, recognised posthumously
🔹 Rohenna Young, Thriving Place to Study and Work
🔹 Dr Shane Gould AM MBE PhD, Learner Centred for Life
🔹 Tan Sri Sir Dr Jeffrey Cheah KBE AO, Global Impact in Education

The evening featured addresses from VU Chancellor The Hon. Dr Steve Bracks AC and Vice-Chancellor Professor Adam Shoemaker, with Australia’s 27th Prime Minister The Hon. Dr Julia Gillard AC delivering the keynote address on the transformative power of education.

Meet our six Impact Legends, discover the impact they’ve had on VU and beyond, and revisit the VU 110 Gala 👉https://www.vu.edu.au/about-vu/news-events/news/six-vu-impact-legends-awarded-at-110-year-anniversary-gala

💬 “Your future is not something you simply enter. You help create it.”
‎ ‎
Today, we welcomed a special guest to address the Class of 2026: distinguished Vikram Pawah (Master of Business Administration, 2000), CEO of BMW Group Australia and New Zealand.
‎ ‎
For Vikram, the celebration was especially meaningful. Despite earning two degrees, this was the first graduation ceremony he had attended, bringing him back to the university that helped shape his journey.
‎ ‎
Drawing on his international career, Vikram shared lessons on embracing change, investing in yourself and finding the courage to begin again. He encouraged our graduates to remain curious, seek guidance from others and use their success to help those around them move forward.

Can you believe VU is turning 110?! And Block A’s ‘Doors of Opportunity’ are still standing & still living up to their name.🚪✨

They date back to our Footscray Technical College era & remain part of the campus today. 🏫 The clothes, classrooms & our name may have changed since then, but the purpose behind those doors hasn’t.

Since our story began in 1916, VU still exists to make education possible for more people from all backgrounds, while growing alongside the proudly diverse communities of Melbourne’s west. As the west has grown & changed, so have we.

Today, around 42% of our students are the first in family to attend university. And through the VU Block Model introduced in 2018, we’re still finding new ways to make learning work better for the students walking through our doors.

One subject. Four weeks. More focus. 📚

That's the VU Block Model® for undergraduate students at VU Sydney.

Instead of juggling several subjects at the same time, you'll focus on one subject before moving on to the next. Postgraduate students study two subjects at a time over eight weeks.

The benefits? Smaller classes, fewer competing deadlines, simple timetables, greater flexibility and ongoing feedback to help you understand how you're progressing.

There’s a new neighbour & partner at our Footscray Nicholson Campus: 👋 hello, Youth Activating Youth(YAY).👋

YAY delivers youth-led services, community programs & internships designed by & for young people, supporting disadvantaged multicultural youth to reconnect with their communities.

Through our new partnership, YAY’s young people & their support networks will have access to practical opportunities & support across VU:
🎓 Education, training & employment pathways, including connections with our Skills & Jobs Centre
🧠 Referrals to VU’s Psychology Clinic, Tax Clinic & Aura Salon
🔍 Research evaluating YAY’s Crime Prevention through Lived Experience program

For VU students, it means placement opportunities spanning Community Development, Youth Work, Law, Business, Social Work & Screen Media.

This partnership feels especially at home at VU & in Melbourne’s west. Almost half of our students come from non-English-speaking backgrounds, while our students & staff represent more than 90 cultures & speak over 200 languages. That diversity shapes our university community & strengthens our shared understanding of the communities YAY works alongside. 🌏 🫱🏾‍🫲🏼
