Howest University of Applied Sciences

Howest University of Applied Sciences Howest FB community for international(ising) students & staff, with information on events & opportunities for internationalisation, and shared experiences.

Howest is a Flemish University of Applied Sciences with 8,500 students and 800 staff and campuses in Brugge (Bruges), Kortrijk (Courtrai), two historical towns in the province of West-Flanders. We are known to be atypical, creative, innovative and entrepreneurial. Anticipating the future and exploring the talents and motivation of each student, we coach our students to become competent, highly emp

loyable, team-oriented young professionals. We aim to set the mark for socially relevant, practice-based education and valorisation oriented research and community service for the broad regional and international labour market. Students will find here an open, vibrant, cosmopolitan and friendly environment that offers a wealth of educational opportunities, with emphasis on high quality and practice-oriented courses. We invest in creating a close-knit Howest Community, creating a home away from home. Howest has its own student rooms and flats at affordable conditions. Anticipating new trends and needs, we design new profiles. In order to do so, we generate practice-based, state of the art curricula in close collaboration with the labour field. In a multidisciplinary setting, we integrate education, research and community service in each curriculum, thus creating an added value for its students, staff and society as a whole. We offer our students an interesting portfolio of 24 bachelor programmes and 12 associate degrees, ranging from management studies, health care and nursing, energy management, applied architecture (BIM) and product development to teaching, journalism and tourism. We are very proud that Howest is the largest University of Applied sciences in West-Flanders, as far as programmes in computer technology, cyber security, creative technologies and digital arts and entertainment are concerned. We offer English taught programmes and introductory courses Dutch for non-native speakers. Our bachelor of Digital Arts and Entertainment has been awarded the Rookie award for best gaming school worldwide three times already. The Howest Academy offers a wide range of post-graduate and tailor made micro degrees. Research is key, especially in the field of virtual and mixed reality, applied artificial intelligence and educational and training games.

Recently, the annual meeting of the OL4D (Oral Literature for Development) project took place in Bishoftu, Ethiopia. 🇪🇹
The project brings together partners from , , and Jimma University.

During the meeting, the book African Storytelling and Images in Teaching was officially launched. The cover and illustrations were created by Howest @ alumna Ann-Sofie Guldentops, while photographs by Howest staff member Gerti Wouters were also featured in the publication.

The partners also laid the groundwork for an online exhibition centred on stories about spiritual objects from East Africa.

An inspiring project!

Rethinking the Role of Gaming in International Development! 🎮🕹💻

Allie Weis, our Ethics Coordinator within Howest DAE Digital Arts and Entertainment, has been invited to speak at the Community Talks event Rethinking the Role of Gaming in International Development, hosted by VLIRUOS .

Colleagues from partner institutions in Finland 🇫🇮, Ireland 🇮🇪, Canada 🇨🇦, Spain 🇪🇸, the Netherlands 🇳🇱, France 🇫🇷, Austria 🇦🇹, and Uganda 🇺🇬 joined us for three days of intensive collaboration. 📚

The focus was on various topics, including student exchange, cooperation on joint programmes, international internships, and, of course, building sustainable connections with colleagues in the same field of social work and applied psychology during several cultural visits to Bruges and Kortrijk. 🌇

Students and colleagues from Howest recently joined the Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme BIP - VULCANO (Vulnerable Groups Critical Appraised Needs and Opportunities) hosted by FH JOANNEUM in Austria 🇦🇹, collaborating with peers from 10 countries.

Together, they worked on impactful projects supporting vulnerable groups, including refugees, people with visual impairments, and neurodivergent individuals. 😍

Through workshops and teamwork, our students gained valuable international experience!

Like every year, a group of Howest students went on a study trip to China! 🌎🥰

Under the guidance of Philip van Haelemeersch, 53 students and 3 lecturers experienced ‘China from within’.

From the Great Wall near Beijing to vibrant Shanghai and Hong Kong, with an invitation at the Belgian Embassy and company visits tailored to the students’ fields of study in Hangzhou and Shenzhen, the programme wrapped up with visits to our partner universities — Zhejiang Gongshang University & Zheijiang Chinese Medical University, both in Hangzhou and Hong Kong Chu Hai College. Everyone goes home with a unique insight into China. 🇨🇳

We were honored to have our president, Mr. Frederik D’hulster, meet the mayor of the beautiful Moroccan city of Chefchaouen as part of the WOW (Windows on the World) programme. 🌎

WOW is a student exchange programme between our Tourism and Recreation Management programme and students of the Tourist Management programme of Alkhawarizmi lyceum. 🤝

This inspiring encounter strengthens the connection between Kortrijk and Chefchaouen and opens new doors for collaboration. Through WOW, we encourage our students and staff at Howest to explore international opportunities and build meaningful partnerships with this beautiful city.

Howest continues to expand horizons and connect cultures. 🥰🌞
