Why study in International Geneva? 🌍
Because International Geneva brings global issues to life.

Geneva is home to a unique concentration of international organisations, NGOs, diplomatic missions, research institutions and experts working on some of the world’s most pressing challenges.

For Geneva Summer Schools participants, this creates opportunities to go beyond the classroom: visit international organisations, meet practitioners, explore concrete cases and challenges, and exchange with people from diverse professional and cultural backgrounds.

Depending on the programme, students can connect their academic learning with the people and institutions working on these issues every day - from human rights and sustainability to digital governance and international cooperation.

This is what makes studying in Geneva so distinctive: the international community becomes part of the learning experience.

How do we make good decisions when we cannot predict the future?

In a world shaped by climate change, geopolitical shifts and interconnected crises, strategic foresight helps us explore possible futures and make better-informed decisions under uncertainty.

Our five-day intensive course in Strategic Foresight gives participants hands-on experience applying these methods to real-world challenges.

In the past summer’s edition, participants worked with the Canton of Geneva’s Office de l’urbanisme (Département du territoire) to explore a pressing question:

💧 How can Greater Geneva secure its water, food and energy in the decade after the ecological transition (2045–2055)?

We spoke with the course leader Ewa Lombard, PhD about the course, why strategic foresight matters today, and what participants can take away from the experience.

💡 “My honest wish is that they become more fluent in making decisions under uncertainty, for themselves and for their organisations.”

Today, let’s talk about the academic dimension of the Geneva Summer School courses.
At Geneva Summer Schools, the academic dimension is at the heart of every programme.
Our courses are developed with and taught by University of Geneva professors, researchers and academic experts, often together with specialists from international organisations and other institutions.

Depending on the programme, participants engage in:

•Lectures and seminars
•Academic discussions and debates
•Case studies and practical exercises
•Group work and collaborative projects
•Presentations and exchanges with peers
•Field visits and encounters with practitioners

The aim is to create an intensive learning experience where participants can deepen their knowledge, question different perspectives and connect academic concepts with concrete challenges articulated by experts from Geneva-based IOs and NGOs, for instance.
For example, the SDG Summer School combines real-world challenges identified by Geneva-based international organisations and NGOs with team-based problem-solving. Participants develop and iteratively refine practical solutions through expert guidance, prototyping, pitching sessions and peer-to-peer exchanges with students worldwide.
The format may vary from one summer school to another, but the academic ambition remains the same: to learn from experts, engage critically with ideas and develop a deeper understanding of complex global issues.

One of the best parts of the Geneva Summer Schools is hearing directly from the people who took part in them and seeing how the experience continues to resonate beyond the summer.

Here is what Kanika, from India, shared with us after taking part in the Science & Policy for Environmental Action 2026 summer school:

“As a proud Geneva Summer Schools 2026 alumna, I look back on the programme as a truly transformative learning experience. It offered invaluable exposure to global governance, international policymaking, and an inspiring network of peers and experts. The knowledge, perspectives, and connections I gained continue to shape my professional journey and commitment to sustainability and science–policy engagement.”

Thank you, Kanika, for taking the time to share your experience with us! We are very happy to know that the programme continues to inspire you in your professional journey.

The Science & Policy for Environmental Action summer school explores the science–policy interface and brings together participants from different backgrounds to look at how scientific knowledge can contribute to addressing complex environmental challenges.

Attending a summer school at the University of Geneva is about more than taking a short academic course.

It is also about experiencing Geneva and discovering a different side of the city once the classroom day is over.

For our participants in the 2026 SDG Summer School, this meant discovering Geneva during the cooler hours of the day, after classes had finished in the late afternoon.

We enjoyed rooftop views from the SDG Solution Space next to Campus Biotech, gathered by the lake, shared drinks as the sun went down, enjoyed fondue at the Bains des Pâquis, and created many more informal moments together along the way.

For us at the Geneva Summer Schools, the social program is not an optional extra. It is an integral part of the learning experience.

These moments allow participants to get to know one another beyond their academic backgrounds and to build connections that are often essential when working together. We see it again and again: once people have had the chance to share a meal, explore the city or simply have a conversation outside the classroom, collaborative group work becomes more natural and often more effective.

International academic exchange does not happen only through lectures and discussions. Sometimes, it starts over a drink by the lake or around a table of Swiss fondue.

Interested in joining us for a future Geneva Summer School? Our 2027 programme will open for registration in December.

A few memories from the 2026 Geneva Summer Schools at the University of Geneva. 🌍

This summer, we welcomed participants from many different countries to Geneva for several weeks of academic learning, exchange and discovery.

Through lectures, seminars, group work, discussions and field visits, participants explored different topics with professors from the University of Geneva and other universities, as well as experts from international organisations and other institutions based in Geneva.

Beyond the classroom, participants had many opportunities to exchange ideas, discover new perspectives and get to know each other.

At the end of their course, all participants leave with a Certificate of Completion from the University of Geneva, and hopefully many good memories from their time in Geneva.

Thank you to all our participants, professors, experts, partners and colleagues who contributed to this year's edition, and to everyone working behind the scenes to make the summer schools happen.

It was a busy summer, but a very rewarding one. We are already looking forward to 2027!
