Since 2020 it is based at Berghotel Alpenblick in Tenna in the Safiental valley of Graubünden. The last edition was titled "LEARNING FROM THE EARTH".

ILEA is a competence and research center in the field of art & ecology and a think & do tank for socio-ecological transformation through art and culture. - Exhibitions, research projects, publications, workshops, symposia and residencies 🏔️🌱🌍 The Institute for Land and Environmental Art (ILEA) is a center for competence and research in art, ecology and creative industries in the peripheral Alpine region that is currently being established. Since 2016, the otudoor Biennale ART SAFIENTAL and the international summer school ALPS ART ACADEMY, both on the topic of LAND and ENVIRONMENTAL ART take place every second year. In 2020 ILEA opened permanent rooms, a residency, research facilities and indoor exhibitions in Berghotel Alpenblick in Tenna. www.ilea.art

Welcome, Raki & Sagar!

Raki Nikahetiya and Sagar Singh, co-founders of the sā Ladakh Biennale, will visit Switzerland from November 1 to 19, 2026, to exchange ideas with artists, researchers, and cultural institutions on regenerative approaches to art, communities, and place.

Their research visit is made possible by the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia, as part of an ongoing collaboration between Switzerland and India.

What does regeneration mean in the context of art and culture?

Join us for a conversation about regenerative approaches to art, culture, and how we engage with places. With Raki Nikahetiya and Sagar Singh, co-founders of the sā Ladakh Biennale, alongside Johannes M. Hedinger (ILEA), Ramon De Marco (Idee und Klang), and Studio Eidola.

Earlier this month, the workshop “URBAN COMMONS. Art & Collective Placemaking“ took place as part of the ZHdK Summer School.
Urban Commons looks at collective action between art, everyday life, and urban practice. We explored how working together can create agency and open up new possibilities in the city.

We were hosted at Labör in Oerlikon, which served as our base for neighbourhood research, reflection, and hands-on workshop activities. On the final day, participants tested ideas for the transformation of the MFO site through temporary, site-specific interventions in the area around Labör.

The event is part of the symposium „WALKING – Thinking in Motion“ (September 11–13, 2026)
Drawing on Annemarie and Lucius Burckhardt’s concept of promenadology (strollology), or the science of walking, this conference brings together artists, researchers, and walkers to explore walking as a critical, spatial, and artistic practice.

About Chris Dercon:
Chris Dercon has directed museums in Rotterdam, Munich, London, and Paris, with a special interest in new museum architecture and the development of public space. He is currently the director of the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, whose programming prominently features architecture and urbanism. At the upcoming Venice Architecture Biennale, the foundation will present the exhibition New Natures at the Fondazione Cini.

Recap of the soundwalk we did last weekend with Fabian Gutscher as part of the ALPS Summer Labor and Reflection, initiated by Kulturstiftung St. Moritz.

A heartfelt thank you to all participants, to Mareike Dittmer for the invitation and curation, and to Inge for the wonderful accommodation.

Don’t miss Marinella Senatore’s light installation in the village centre and at Forum Paracelsus in St. Moritz, on view until October 31.

And take a little detour to the Morteratsch Glacier while you still can. A little sad, but still deeply impressive.
