From invasive plants to a vaulted ceiling.

The South African startup nonCrete has built a community centre using biomass concrete made from recycled invasive plants. The low-strength shell structure of the ceiling was made possible by the Block Research Group.

The Indlovu Floor system is unreinforced, low-cost and carbon-negative, and can largely be built by local workers. In 2026, it passed the full-scale load and fire tests required for national certification.

To develop the system further, nonCrete is looking for collaboration partners in South Africa and abroad. Interested people or companies are welcome to reach out to co-founder Stephen Lamb.
