On , let's maintain Egypt's polio-free status 💪🏽

In 2006, Egypt was declared polio-free.

But polio has not disappeared from the world. Therefore, continued vaccination remains important to continue protecting children.

Maintaining Egypt’s polio-free status requires maintaining high vaccination coverage and a strong surveillance system for timely detection and response, even when the disease is no longer seen in our communities.

On :

✅ Check that your children have received all recommended doses of the polio vaccine.
✅ Join national vaccination campaigns when announced.

With support from the World Health Organization (WHO) in Egypt and funding from the Government of Denmark, a medical team at Ain Shams Specialized Hospital successfully performed a highly complex cardiac intervention on a 13-year-old Palestinian boy. The procedure represented his only chance of survival, despite having a success rate of no more than 25%.

With support from WHO, Ain Shams Specialized Hospital provided a highly qualified multidisciplinary medical team, along with an American-made heart valve and its specialized advisory team to ensure precise implantation and compliance with the necessary safety requirements. The total cost of the procedure was approximately US$50,000.

During a press conference, the renewal of the partnership was announced, with an additional US$1.5 million in funding to continue supporting Palestinian patients in Egypt by facilitating access to essential health services, providing medical supplies, and strengthening the capacity of healthcare workers.

Congratulations to Egypt 🎉

Today, Dr Amr Kandeel, Deputy Minister of Health and Population, received the WHO certificate designating Egypt's Field Epidemiology Training Program (Egypt FETP) as a WHO Collaborating Centre.

With this 4-year designation, Egypt FETP becomes the first WHO Collaborating Centre for field epidemiology training in the Eastern Mediterranean Region.
The programme builds public health professionals' skills to detect diseases early and investigate and respond to them. These efforts contribute to stronger health security and public health systems.

As a WHO Collaborating Centre, it will support WHO’s efforts to strengthen field epidemiology capacity across the Region. It will also serve as a model for field epidemiology training, sharing expertise and providing technical guidance to other countries on establishing, implementing, sustaining and accrediting their programmes.

With funding from Japan, WHO Egypt, in collaboration with the Egyptian Ambulance Organization (EAO), conducted four training rounds on Infection Prevention and Control, and Risk Communication and Community Engagement during Health Emergencies in Port Said in August and September 2026.

The training reached 197 EAO leaders, health professionals, paramedics, supervisors and drivers, strengthening their capacity to detect and respond to infectious disease outbreaks and emergencies.

This activity supports Egypt’s preparedness to respond to health needs of the medical evacuees arriving from Gaza to receive treatment in Egypt, while protecting patients and frontline responders.
